Labor Day may be in the rearview mirror but we’re not ready to let go of summer just yet.  Here’s how some of our favorite celebs spent the long weekend.

Here’s a fun Labor Day weekend story… We just decided to add two new members to our Johnson family. Baby French Bulldogs. In my right hand is BRUTUS and in my left hand is HOBBS. Bring them home and immediately take them outside so they can start learning how to “handle their business and potty like big boys”. I set them both down and they both take off in a full sprint and fall right into the deep end of our pool. HOBBS immediately starts doggy paddling while BRUTUS (like a brick) sink heads first to the bottom of the pool. I take off into a full sprint, fully clothed, dive in the pool, swim to the bottom, rescue my brick, I mean BRUTUS and bring him back to the edge of the pool. He was a little delirious.. took a moment, threw up all the water he swallowed and looked up at me as if to say, “Thank God you didn’t have to give me mouth to mouth!” and then ran off to play with his brother. A few lessons I’ve learned today.. A) Not all puppies have the instinct to doggie paddle. B) Some puppies (like BRUTUS) will be so in shock by experiencing water they will sink extremely fast so react quick. C) While spiriting to save your puppies life, before you dive in, try and throw your cel phone to safety. Don’t keep it in your pocket… like I did. #BRUTUSLives #HOBBSCanSwim #MyCelPhonesDead #AndNoMouthToMouthNeeded #HappyLaborDay

Police Drain Lagoon Where Dismembered Child Was Found

Tuesday, Chicago authorities released more details about the dismembered child found over the weekend in Garfield Park Lagoon and revealed that they are draining the lagoon in hopes of finding more evidence.

Officials say the body parts — the head, feet, and hands — were likely that of a Black boy between 8 months and 4 years old, reports the Chicago Tribune. However, officials admit the child could be of “mixed race heritage” and could also be a girl. Since the ears aren’t pierced, police assumed the remains are from a boy, but that’s not definite. They also said the age could be more in the range of 2 and 3 years old.

City crews have begun draining millions of gallons of water from the lagoon into sewers. They’ve also constructed a temporary dam at the east side of the lagoon. The draining and police investigation could take two to four days, and then the temporary dam will be removed.

“It is very possible that the missing remains are not in the lagoon,” said police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, reports the news outlet. “Whoever did this could have disposed of the other extremities.”

Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said in a joint statement they are taking all efforts to identify the badly decomposed remains, including DNA testing, checking for dental records, taking fingerprints and footprints, and consulting an anthropologist.

Anyone with information about missing children fitting the child’s description is asked to contact Area North detectives at 312-744-8261. Read more at the Chicago Tribune.

Following her U.S. Open quartfinals win yesterday against older sister Venus, Serena Williams posted a heartfelt message to her sibling on Instagram.

With the win, Serena advances to the semifinals where she’ll play Roberta Vinci, putting her that much closer to winning her fifth U.S. Open. And nabbing a Grand Slam this year (meaning that she won all four of the major tennis tournaments: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.)

Serena and Venus weren’t the only ones feeling the love. Celebrity friends and fans also chimed in with poignant messages and well wishes about the sisters dual success. Before the match commenced, actor Omari Hardwick declared both sisters winners.

Because your Father believed that a culture of sport not necessarily associated with our culture was potentially SPOT ON for you to learn. Because he decided not only could you become good at the sport but that you BOTH could potentially master it someday. Because your father made no excuses for the minimal training facilities “offered” by the neighborhood surrounding you. In his mind, these make shift courts laced with rope he had made into your magical net…were as efficient as the training grounds of your often silver spooned to at least well to do one day competitors. Because he was in tune with you enough to trust you possessed your own innate magic & work ethic & HEART to understand that though Tennis would give you the world, it would never be your PURPOSE. THAT would be YOU giving to the world… Namely to the world of those like you, who grew up with LESSER. Because way before Malcolm Gladwell could formulate a book of thought about the disadvantaged in life perhaps teetering on becoming the advantaged, your out of the box thinking Father was SHOWING this concept via his brilliant baby girls. & I can write this letter to you & him from a humbling “stage” of 300,000 plus perhaps listening because my Father who celebrates his birthday ON this momentous day of yet again a sibling rivalry-match made in heaven……thought OUT OF THE BOX too! We say thank you for Pops like Williams & Hardwick. **The W in the above racket can only truly stand for W….inner. There are NO losers in tonight’s battle. Undercover NYPD Cop Slammed Tennis Great James Blake To Ground

UPTOWN_james_blake_nypd_arrest

A white undercover NYPD cop slammed former tennis star James Blake to the ground and arrested him Wednesday outside his New York hotel, in what has proven to be a case of mistaken identity.

The police were investigating a case in which fake credit cards were used to buy cell phones. A witness told police he believed Blake had purchased phones from him on Tuesday, but that wasn’t the case, reports NY1.

Blake was waiting for his car to arrive in front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan when police tackled and handcuffed him. He says a man in a T-shirt and shorts, who he thought recognized him as a tennis player, rushed towards him and didn’t identify himself as a police officer. Four other police joined the fray.

“It was definitely scary and definitely crazy,” Blake told the New York Daily News.

He also said that none of the other officers involved identified themselves as cops after he was slammed to the ground. Police held him there for 15 minutes until a former cop who works at the hotel identified the tennis player, who was once ranked as No. 4 in the world.

“This shouldn’t have happened, and it’s something that, you know, we’ll deal with with the police and we’ll find out what they have to say say internally,” Blake said. “You know, hopefully there was, there’s video of it and we’ll see what happens.”

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton spoke exclusively with NY1, saying he’d like to apologize to Blake.

“It’s very disturbing. The idea, he claims that he was rushed by a person in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt who pushed him to the ground and he was assisted by four others who identified themselves ultimately as police officers and that he suffered an injury as a result of that. Just the nature what he described is not what we do,” Bratton said.

Blake says the use of force was inappropriate and the cops may have been motivated by race.

“In my mind there’s probably a race factor involved, but no matter what, there’s no reason for anybody to do that to anybody,” Blake, who is biracial, told the Daily News. “You’d think they could say, ‘Hey, we want to talk to you. We are looking into something.’ I was just standing there. I wasn’t running. It’s not even close [to being OK]. It’s blatantly unnecessary.”

The officer was initially placed on modified assignment, however NY1 reported during a newscast that the officer has been stripped of his gun and badge. The NYPD Internal Affairs is investigating.

Blake, who is presumably in New York for the U.S. Open, suffered cuts to his elbow and leg in the incident.

It’s A Wrap for Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

At a surprise press conference on Friday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced that she will not pursue re-election in 2016.  The Baltimore mayor wants to focus instead on governing the city after the unrest that followed the death of Freddie Gray in police custody and, after her term is up, focus on her family.

The announcement comes just days after the city of Baltimore offered Freddie Gray’s family a $6.4 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit in the death of the 25 year old while he was in police custody.

From AP:

“It was a very difficult decision, but I knew I needed to spend time focused on the city’s future, not my own,” she said, noting she thought about her future throughout the summer as the criminal case against the officers moved forward.

“It’s something that has been a nagging concern for me, and something I’ve prayed about a lot,” she said.

When asked if she had effectively made herself a lame duck, Rawlings-Blake said that was not the case. She said she did not want every decision she made over the next 15 months to be evaluated in the context of a political campaign.

“I’m focused right now on governing, rather than campaigning for mayor at this critical time in our history,” she said.

The 45-year-old Democrat assumed office in 2010 after her predecessor, Sheila Dixon, was convicted of embezzling gift cards for needy families and pleaded in a separate case for lying about gifts from her developer ex-boyfriend. Rawlings-Blake won the 2011 Democratic primary with about 52 percent of the vote in the heavily Democratic city.

Some questioned her readiness to lead the city at first, but she won praise for her handling of snowstorms and budget gaps.

That praise turned to criticism as many blasted her handling of the unrest following Gray’s death. For nearly five hours on the day of Gray’s funeral, as windows were smashed and buildings set aflame across swaths of east and west Baltimore, she was nowhere to be seen. The next day, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said Rawlings-Blake did not return his calls for hours as he sought guidance on whether to call in the National Guard.

She was also criticized for the enforcement and length of a citywide curfew she authorized, which was more strictly carried out in poor neighborhoods than in wealthier parts of the majority-black city.

As homicides spiked in July, she fired Police Commissioner Anthony Batts and appointed one of his deputies in the interim.

Rawlings-Blake said she hoped her cabinet members would stay on the job for the next 15 months, but acknowledged that there is often turnover at the end of an administration.

Several people, including Dixon, have announced plans to seek the Democratic nomination in the April 26 primary. The general election is often seen as a formality in the heavily Democratic city, which hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1967. The city recently shifted its election cycle to bring it in sync with the state and federal election cycle to attract more voters.

Dixon declined to comment on how the mayor’s decision would change the race, saying only that Rawlings-Blake and her family have made sacrifices, and “I think she’s earned the right to pursue other goals and other challenges in her life.”

Rawlings-Blake comes from a family that’s long been part of Baltimore’s black elite. Her father, Howard “Pete” Rawlings, who died in 2003, was a well-regarded, longtime state legislator who chaired the powerful appropriations committee in the House of Delegates, the first African-American to do so. Rawlings-Blake and her husband have a daughter, and the mayor said she wanted to spend more time with her as she enters her teenage years.

Miss America CEO Apologizes To Vanessa Williams 32 Years Later

UPTOWN_miss_america_vanessa_williams_sam_haskell

Last night, Vanessa Williams stepped onto the Miss America stage for the first time in 32 years after resigning in 1984 amid a pornography scandal. In 1983, Williams was crowned the first Black Miss America, but then Penthouse published nude photos of her that were shot in 1982. Although she reportedly felt pressured by pageant officials to resign and didn’t hold onto her crown, she went on to become the most successful Miss America as a singer and actor.

Perhaps realizing that Williams couldn’t be a part of last night’s festivities without addressing the scandal, producers projected headlines from her ordeal — “Miss America Gives Up Crown,” “I’ve Hit Rock Bottom” — onto giant screens as she performed Amy Grant’s “Oh How the Years Go By.” Then Miss America CEO Sam Haskell officially apologized for the controversy:

“I have been a close friend to this beautiful and talented lady for 32 years. You have lived your life in grace and dignity and never was it more evident than during the events of 1984 when you resigned. Though none of us currently in the organization were involved then, on behalf of today’s organization, I want to apologize to you and to your mother, Miss Helen Williams. I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less than the Miss America you are and the Miss America you always will be.”

However, as recently as Friday, it was unclear who would do the apologizing, according to TMZ. Williams wanted pageant officials to apologize and they wanted her to. In the end, Williams won out and graciously accepted Haskell’s apology, saying his words were “so unexpected, but so beautiful.”

“I did the best that I could as my reign as Miss America, 1983 to 1984,” Williams added. “On behalf of my family, my mother in particular, Brian Edwards, who orchestrated this entire thing to bring me back, and your leadership, your integrity, and you bringing this pageant back to what it ought to be. I love you, I love the girls, and I’m so honored to be back.”

On Monday’s season premiere of The Real, Bobby Brown opens up about losing his daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. Bobbi Kristina died six months after being found unresponsive in her Atlanta home.  She was buried on August 3 next to her mother Whitney Houston at Fairview Cemetery in New Jersey.

In the interview, Bobby Brown spoke about his daughter – and ex-wife Whitney Houston – in a light-hearted way.  Sitting next to wife Alicia Etheredge, the singer seemed to have found some peace in the situation, although he did note earlier, “If I could have been there two days before, it wouldn’t have went down like that.”

Here, he talks about the role Whitney played in bringing Bobbi Kristina ‘home.’

Bobbi Kristina’s death is still being investigated. Her boyfriend Nick Gordon has been accused by Bobbi Kristina’s conservator of domestic abuse and giving her “a toxic cocktail rendering her unconscious and then put her face down in a tub of cold water” the night she was found. He has repeatedly denied those claims.

Watch Matt Damon Argue With Black Producer About Diversity [VIDEO]

Matt Damon showed just how little he knows about diversity in Hollywood when he appeared on the HBO docuseries Project Greenlight Sunday night.

Project Greenlight highlights film directors hopefully getting their big break by being attached to a project. Damon, Ben Affleck, the Farrelly brothers, and Effie Brown, the woman who produced Dear White People, were trying to choose a director for a comedy that has a Black prostitute (Harmony) as the main character.

Brown wanted to choose Leo Angelos, an Asian man, and Kristen Brancaccio, a white woman, because she felt they would bring diversity to the project.

“I would want to urge people to think about—whoever this director is, how they’re going to treat the character of Harmony,” she said, “the only Black character who’s a hooker who gets hit by her white pimp.”

Damon said he didn’t want them to be chosen because they didn’t address any of the problematic issues of Harmony’s character. However, his next comments drew the most ire.

“When we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not in the casting of the show,” said Damon to argue his point that diverse directors aren’t necessary.

Visibly perplexed and annoyed, Brown responded, “Hoo. Wow. OK!”

Check out the clip below of Matt Damon talking over Effie Brown, a Black female producer, about diversity and the lack thereof in Hollywood and filmmaking.

Singer Toni Braxton is set to star in “Un-Break My Heart,” an original movie based on her memoir of the same name.  The authorized movie begins production later this year.

The project follows “Braxton’s ups and downs through severe chronic illness, financial troubles and divorce while navigating her son’s autism and family struggles.”

What exactly would that look like?  In a 2013 interview, Braxton recalled thinking about quitting the music business. “I was in a small place in my life and I was going to retire,” Braxton explains. “It’s not even a question. I said, ‘I’m tired of fighting.’ I was feeling sorry for myself. I was depressed over where my career was going. I was also down with my health,” she continues.

“I found out that I developed blood clots and I couldn’t get a grip on this lupus. I didn’t know what was going on with me. I was just in a very uncomfortable place in my life and where I wouldn’t wish my worst enemy to be.”

TX Officials Arrest Muslim Teen After Mistaking His Homemade Clock For A Bomb

UPTOWN_ahmed_mohamed

Irving, TX police officers arrested 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed after he brought a digital clock he made at home to school, and officials, making an assumption about his Islamic religion, thought it was a bomb.

Ahmed brought the clock, that took him just 20 minutes to create, to MacArthur High Monday to show his engineering teacher because he was proud.

“He was like, ‘That’s really nice,'” Ahmed told the Dallas Morning News. “‘I would advise you not to show any other teachers.'”

Ahmed kept the clock in his bag, but then the alarm went off while he was in English class. Ahmed brought the clock to show the teacher, once the class was over.

“She was like, ‘It looks like a bomb,'” he said. “I told her, ‘It doesn’t look like a bomb to me.'”

The English teacher kept the clock, according to the Morning News. The principal of MacArthur and a police officer removed Ahmed from his six-period class and brought him to a room where four more officers were waiting.

When he walked in, an officer that Ahmed had never seen before said: “Yup. That’s who I thought it was.”

Ahmed told the newspaper that the officers questioned him and searched his belongings. He also said the principal threatened to expel him if he didn’t write a statement.

“They were like, ‘So you tried to make a bomb?'” Ahmed said.

“I told them, ‘No, I was trying to make a clock.'”

“He said, ‘It looks like a movie bomb to me.'”

To the shock of onlookers, including Ahmed’s school counselor who he says “knows that I’m a good boy,” police officers on either side of the handcuffed teen escorted him from the school, around 3 p.m.

Even though Ahmed maintained that he made a clock, he was still arrested, fingerprinted, and held until his parents came to the police station to pick him up.

As of Tuesday, police hadn’t charged Ahmed with any crime. However, he was expelled from school for three days.

“They thought, ‘How could someone like this build something like this unless it’s a threat?'” Ahmed said.

“He just wants to invent good things for mankind,” Ahmed’s father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, told the Morning News of his tinkering son whose bedroom is filled with wires and bits, circuit boards, and soldering irons. “But because his name is Mohamed and because of Sept. 11, I think my son got mistreated.”

Several people are standing in solidarity with Ahmed, voicing their concern with the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed.
