Editor’s Pick: Caress Forever Collection Prevents Summer Funk

Summer often makes me nostalgic. I reminisce about days of white-water rafting, mountain climbing, or simply playing tag with my fellow day campers. But once I came home, the fun was put on hold with four little words from my mom. “You smell like outside,” she would say. That didn’t mean I smelled like summer rain, linens drying in the sun, or any other ridiculous scent candle and detergent companies dream up. It meant that I stunk, like a New York City street, and needed to shower. Although my mom has stopped having to tell me when to bathe, there are still moments after being in the subway or walking through walls of humidity that I feel like I smell like outside.

UPTOWN_caress_forever_collection

This summer, those moments have been far and few between because I’ve started showering with the Caress Forever Collection, which is the first body wash with fragrance touch technology. The wash contains Fragrance Release Pearls that very subtly burst with every touch of the skin, releasing a faint yet noticeable fragrance.

The Caress Forever Collection features two scents, both of which smell amazing and were crafted by renowned, award-winning Caress master perfumer Loc Dong. I was unable to choose just one and have been alternating Love Forever and Adore Forever daily. Caress describes Love Forever as “rich floriental sweetness blended with lush dark berries and the freshly picked Scarlet Red Rose,” and Adore Forever as “irresistibly romantic fragrance with touches of melting honey, vanilla, and the freshly picked Angel Face Rose.”

I also have to mention there’s something very sophisticated and sexy about the black bottle.

The other great aspect of the Caress Forever Collection body washes is that the scents won’t overpower your favorite perfume. You’ll most likely start the day smelling like whichever perfume you spritzed on, but you’ll end the day giving off the scent of either Love Forever or Adore Forever. Plus, no one will say you smell like outside.

Cosby Show Actor Puts Bill Cosby On Blast

Another actor has joined the growing list of celebrities who’ve taken away their support of Bill Cosby over the allegations and lawsuits that he drugged and raped dozens of women over his career.  Former Cosby Show actor Joseph C. Phillips, who played Lieutenant Martin Kendall, husband to Lisa Bonet’s character, wrote about his history with the embattled comedian on his blog.

cosby show joseph c phillips

Phillips, who transitioned from actor to political commentator and writer,  also included an anecdote from a woman who confessed what Cosby did to her. Ultimately, it was her story that convinced Phillips that Cosby, beyond being known as an unfaithful husband at the time and despite his reverence for the the legend, was guilty of rape.

When I joined the cast of the Cosby Show in 1989, it seemed to be common knowledge that Bill played around. When I say common knowledge, I mean that it was just something that people seemed to know without anyone saying anything. Bill sleeping around was a “fact” that, like, the air, seemed to just be. You didn’t have to see it or hear it to know that it existed.

There was also the seeming unending parade of pretty young women that streamed through the studio.  In fact, that is what some of us called it – the parade.  Light skinned.  “Good” hair. One prettier than the next.  I was 28, healthy, single, and horny as hell!  You will forgive me if I wasn’t really focused on Bill during the parades.

Of course, people said things to me as if they had first-hand knowledge of Bills business, and maybe they did. I suspect however, that rather than eyewitness testimony, what they had was the same thing that I had: speculation and gossip.  I love dish as much as the next person, but I do prefer to see with my own eyes.

I also know that men who are wealthy and powerful are always the target of gossip, lies, and slander. Hell, you don’t even have to be wealthy, powerful, or good looking. The truth is that people will lie about you just because they are bored!

Still, his infidelity to his marriage vows would not have surprised me. I don’t say that as any comment on Bill’s character. I say it only because I think it would be extremely difficult for any rich, powerful man to say, “No” every single time a woman threw herself at him. I was a scrub and the opportunities for sex that were tossed my way were numerous. I suspect that if I had been really famous and extremely wealthy, the opportunities would have increased exponentially (as would have the lies and gossip). Does any man have the fortitude to turn so much nookie down every single time? Some, perhaps.  I don’t think many.

I am also of the opinion that some women who are married to prominent men strike a deal with themselves. They believe that, for men, the act of sex is removed from love. The bargain they make is that as long as their husbands continue to bring home the checks and don’t bring home any babies or diseases, they will overlook any dalliances.

So, in 1989, my attitude was that if Bill was cheating on Camille, I am fairly certain Camille knew. Hey, if everyone who claimed to know actually knew, then certainly Camille knew, and had long ago made her peace with it. At any rate, it was none of my business. I never saw Bill engage in any inappropriate behavior.  I certainly never saw him drug anyone. So, all I have is the same gossip as everyone else.

As the accusations began to increase, I became increasingly disturbed.  I was fairly certain that some of the women were lying through their teeth, but certainly not all of them.  Discovering that the man you idolize may be a serial rapist is a bit traumatic. I don’t imagine it is anything near to the trauma of the alleged victims. Nevertheless, I found it unsettling.

I was particularly shaken the afternoon I bumped into an old friend while shopping. The controversy was at its height. The story of Bill was all over the press. I hadn’t seen this woman for many years.  Back in the day, I had asked her out on a few dates, but was relegated to the friend zone so fast it made my ears wiggle.  We had kept in touch for a few years, but our lives had taken different paths. Over the years, I had watched with a passive interest as her career grew, so I was excited to see her and catch up a bit.

As we spoke, I recalled that Bill had been her mentor (play father, teacher…something. I couldn’t quite recall what it was).  The question popped into my head.

“Hey, do you mind if I ask you something?”

She looked at me and then asked, “Is it going to make me cry?”

I was a bit taken aback. “Well,” I stammered. “I hope it doesn’t make you cry.”

She smiled. “Go ahead and ask your question.”

“Back in the day,” I started. “I remember that you knew Bill – that he was like your mentor or something. Did he ever…”

Before I finished the sentence, she began to cry.

We spent the next two hours sitting on a bench talking. Through tears, she told me her story. She cursed him for violating both her trust and her body. She cursed herself for not being smarter, and for degrading herself in pursuit of success. I listened patiently. As she began to run out of steam, she turned to me. “Do you believe me?”

“Yes.” I said. “I believe you.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Because I don’t believe that you are crazy and only a crazy person would sit with me all this time and share a fantasy.”

I am not sure if our conversation was cathartic for her. I know it was heart-breaking for me.

As I drove home, I battled my emotions.  I felt for my friend, for the violation of her trust, loyalty, and body.  I was angry with Bill.  He had money, fame, and power; he was a walking aphrodisiac!  Why?  I was also angry at myself for falling for the okey-doke, of putting Bill on a pedestal.  Something changed inside me during that drive; call it the last gasp of a mocking bird.

More recently, there were a series of court documents that were unsealed and revealed a dark side to the Cos.  Rather than spending his time bouncing kids on his knee and eating Jell-O brand pudding, this Bill was involved in illegal drugs and illicit sex, fornication, and perhaps more.

I’ve done a lot of thinking over these weeks.  The good Bill has done over the years is real and enduring.  I am not prepared to simply dismiss his brilliance, his wisdom, or his legacy.  You see, all of that is a part of who I am as a man – as a Black man.  I am not going to toss all of that away, at least not yet. It seems to me that one should be able to look with sober eyes and yet hold on to those elements of substance that are both true and comforting.

Top Toast: Wedding Reception Trends That Leave An Impression

Three reception experiences that your guests will envy.

uptown martini

Cocktail Receptions

With daytime weddings, the hours between the end of the ceremony and the start of the dinner reception are excruciating. Who says day drinking is just for brunch? Savvy couples are opting for short and sweet cocktail receptions over all-night dinners with open bar parties. Guests will agree there is everything right about seguing directly from 12 p.m. vows into a festive 2 p.m. celebration featuring adult beverages, hors d’oeuvres and great music. Added bonus: budget hawks will appreciate this less fussy alternative to a full sit-down dinner for 100-plus guests.

Hand-Crafted Signature Cocktails

NYC-based wedding planner Cameran Howell sees “His and Hers signature drinks” going beyond a cocktail menu centered on the bride’s and groom’s favorite spirits. “We have a lot of clients who are hiring mixologists to hand-craft cocktails using ingredients—bitters, tonics, fresh juices— especially curated to the their palate to create drinks that also complement the food,” she says. Oenophiles can work with a sommelier to ensure guests have a memorable wine experience that represents the couple’s preferences—or travels—and those that pair well with the menu.

woodford reserve

Bottled Bespoke

Hands-on drinking partners are going straight to the source: commissioning distilleries to create and bottle spirits of their design to serve at the reception or give as gifts. A trip to the distillery kicks off the process, where the couple tours the facility, samples blends and then works with craftspeople to formulate their own blends. For instance, after touring Casa Maestri Distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, betrothed lovers can create their own blend of silver, añejo or reposado tequila. Pricing starts at $2,500 for six 750-millilliter bottles with custom labels, which ship approximately a month after the visit.

On the bourbon side, there’s the Distiller’s Select Personal Selection Program offered by Woodford Reserve in Kentucky. Following a Bourbon Discovery tour and tasting session, lovebirds create a signature batch of Woodford Reserve from their two favorite barrel samples. Production and delivery takes five to six months. Pricing is in the $10,000 range and includes 180 1-liter bottles of bourbon with personalized labels, an engraved barrelhead souvenir and a permanent plaque at the distillery bearing the couple’s name.

Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis Make Emmy Nominations History

With the 2014-15 TV season being one of the most diverse in recent years, many were wondering whether nods would go to the actors of color whose work on the small screen earned ratings for the top networks. Not only did Taraji P. Henson and Viola Davis step into new roles on new TV shows (Empire and How To Get Away with Murder, respectively) this season, but they also made Emmy nominations history.

Both Henson and Davis earned nods for lead actress in a drama series. This is the first time two Black women have been nominated for the coveted award. With both women being nominated in that category, there is the possibility that for the first time ever a Black woman could win the coveted Emmy for one of the most competitive categories.

Fortunately, Davis and Henson aren’t the only actors of color to earn nods. Anthony Anderson (black-ish), David Oyelowo (Nightingale), Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Cicely Tyson (How To Get Away with Murder), Queen Latifah (Bessie), and Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) were all nominated.

Noticeably missing from the Emmy nominations was Terrence Howard, who stars alongside Henson in FOX’s smash hit Empire. Although the show picked up three nominations, including Henson’s, Howard was shut out of the lead actor in a drama series and lead actor categories.

Petition Calls For Attorney General To Investigate Sandra Bland’s Death

UPTOWN_sandra_bland

A ColorOfChange.org petition is calling for U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate the suspicious death of Sandra Bland while in police custody. The police claim Bland took her own life and local District Attorney Elton Mathis handed the investigation back to the Texas State troopers, the same agency that allegedly used excessive force when arresting Bland.

Here’s the email Rashad Robinson and the rest of the ColorOfChange.org team sent out today explaining the situation and calling for Lynch to lead the investigation:

“You just slammed my head to the ground. Do you not even care about that?”

These were some of the last words of 28-year-old Sandra Bland. On Friday, Texas State troopers pulled Sandra over as she was driving to her new job for allegedly not using the turn signals during a lane change. What happened next was all too familiar and terrifying.

An eye-witness says police ripped Sandra out of the car, violently slammed her on the ground, and arrested her as she screamed for help. Just 72 two hours later, she was dead. Police are claiming Sandra took her own life, but her family and friends don’t believe it. Local District Attorney Elton Mathis has already said he has no reason to expect foul play and handed over the investigation to the same police agency that arrested Sandra.

Police cannot police themselves. Urge Attorney General Lynch to thoroughly investigate Sandra’s death and hold all those responsible fully accountable.

DA Mathis said there was no reason for concern, despite the fact that an allegedly routine traffic stopped turned into a violent arrest is itself a cause for concern. Sandra’s family says that Sandra would never kill herself and that police seem to be covering up her death. We must demand that local officials release all video, information and photographs relating to Sandra’s unjust arrest, imprisonment and death.

The local police department and prosecutor’s office have a long history of racism and corruption. Last year, DA Mathis threatened a local Reverend who spoke out about racist prosecutions, saying he would release his “hounds” on the Reverend.5 Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith was fired from the police department in Hempstead, Texas for documented cases of racism.5

According to her loved ones, Sandra Bland was a loving, compassionate woman, with a bright future ahead. Today would have been the first day at her new job working student outreach at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University. Loved ones described her as bright, spirited, and having a thirst for life. She was also a vocal advocate against police brutality and often spoke about ending racism and police violence. Our hearts and minds are with her friends and family as they move through this unimaginably hard time.

But in a world where Black people are stereotyped as “violent” and police exist to enforce the boundaries of a deeply divided and racist society, who Sandy was or the life she was creating, did not matter. What mattered was that she was Black, and therefore, in the eyes of the law, didn’t deserve respect, didn’t deserve her civil rights, her freedom or her life. To be Black in America, is to be safe nowhere. Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to be targeted by police and incarcerated than white women.

The Department of Justice and Attorney General Lynch have the power and responsibility to address the systemic police violence targeting Black communities. The reality is, racism, corruption and a deep-seated culture of secrecy prevents local and state police from holding themselves accountable. Without independent oversight, police will continue to kill and prosecutors will continue to do nothing. We should not have to demand justice, every time a Black person is murdered, but we will continue to do so until the justice system respects Black lives.

Urge US Attorney General Loretta Lynch to secure justice for Sandy and help end discriminatory police violence targeting Black people in Texas.

Thanks and peace,

— Rashad, Arisha, Shani, Lyla and the rest of the ColorOfChange.org team

It’s been a decade since we got a glimpse at Mariah Carey‘s shoe closet on MTV Cribs, but the chanteuse recently gave us a peek inside her 2015 shoe closet.

Mariah says her immaculately clean and gold-detailed shoe closet is her favorite room in the house, and we can see why. There are about 112 bedazzled heels and knee-high boots visible in the photo Mariah posted to Instagram, but we’re willing to bet the room holds at least quadruple that amount of shoes.

How does Mariah not suffer from the tyranny of choice? How does she decide which shoes to wear? How does she give all those shoes the individual attention they need? These are the questions we need answered.

“It’s taken my entire life to negotiate how to identify, and I’ve done a lot of research and a lot of studying.

I could have a long conversation, an academic conversation about that. I don’t know. I just feel like I didn’t mislead anybody; I didn’t deceive anybody.

If people feel misled or deceived, then sorry that they feel that way, but I believe that’s more due to their definition and construct of race in their own minds than it is to my integrity or honesty, because I wouldn’t say I’m African American, but I would say I’m black, and there’s a difference in those terms.”

In a ‘where is she now’ update interview with Vanity Fair, Rachel Dolezal, still maintains she wasn’t being deceitful about her identity or when she claimed an African American man was her father. Dolezal also makes mention of what she’s doing for money now that she’s no longer with the NAACP – she’s seguing into black hair care, doing braids and weaves.  And of course she wants to write a book to explain everything.

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom‘s marriage will soon be officially over, after they’ve lived separately for nearly two years.

They both have signed the legal documents necessary to dissolve their marriage and have reached a property agreement. The documents were filed last Friday, according to court records. Now, Khloe and Lamar are awaiting a judge’s signature to make their divorce final.

You might remember that Khloe filed for divorce in December 2013. However, she didn’t act on the filing for so long that a judge threatened to dismiss the case.

In the in between time, Khloe moved on romantically and was linked to rapper French Montana for awhile. Now, she’s got basketball player James Harden on her arm.

Too bad for Lamar because despite signing the divorce papers, it seems he had hoped for a reconciliation. He even called his estranged wife “my girl” recently.

Ava DuVernay Tweets Sandra Bland Dash-Cam Video Was Edited [VIDEO]

UPTOWN_sandra_bland

Ava DuVernay and other video experts are telling people to take a closer look at the recently released dash-cam video of a Texas state trooper arresting Sandra Bland. The footage appears to be a simple play-by-play of Bland’s interaction with Trooper Brian T. Encinia, but editing and directing experts, like DuVernay, see discrepancies in what they say is an edited version.

DuVernay took to Twitter to back up journalist Ben Norton, who wrote about the anomalies in the dash-cam video, like cars disappearing and reappearing.

On his eponymous blog, Norton lists the discrepancies in the video.

At 32:37, a white car drives into the left side of the frame, then promptly disappears in the middle of the road. Seconds later, the same car drives back into the frame and subsequently turns left. This footage is later looped several times.

A different white car also drives into the left side of the frame and turns left from 32:49 to 32:59. The previous white car again briefly enters the frame at 33:04, and once more at 33:06, yet it suddenly disappears both times. When these cuts are made in the footage, the lights on top of the truck in the center of the frame also abruptly cut out.

At 33:08, the exact same footage from 32:37 is repeated, followed by the same second white car at 33:17.

Even the Los Angeles Times has gone on record to say the 52-minute video (above) was edited.

“In the video, which is more than 52 minutes long, there are several spots where cars and people disappear and reappear. When it released the video, the department did not mention any editing. The audio ends more than a minute before the video images do,” the Los Angeles Times wrote.

“One of the more conspicuous anomalies comes 25 minutes and five seconds into the video, when a man walks from a truck off screen and then reappears suddenly at the spot where he began walking. The image flutters for a moment before resuming,” the article continued.

Encinia arrested Bland on suspicion of assaulting a public servant, which is a felony charge. He took her to the Waller County Jail, where officials say she committed suicide in her cell on July 13. Her family and supporters do not support that finding and have called for an investigation.

After yesterday’s 2015 MTV VMA nominations were announced, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to thank MTV for her three nominations and to express disappointment that her record-breaking video ‘Anaconda‘ didn’t get a nod for Video of the Year. She used the moment to highlight disparities with how much black artists, women in particular, influence pop culture but don’t get the same accolades as their peers.

Nicki’s irritation was with MTV and the industry in general but Video of the Year nominee Taylor Swift took it personally. In a now deleted out-of-left-field tweet, Taylor, assuming she was the target of Nicki’s frustration, jumped into the convo.

taylor swift lashes out at nicki minaj Clearly confused, Nicki clarified, with an invite to Taylor to join the conversation in a meaningful way. She followed with a retweet from a fan that perhaps helped bring the issue more into focus for Taylor, and others.

Taylor later backpedaled with this olive branch.

To illustrate real-time example about media bias, Nicki pointed out that during the back and forth, radio host Ryan Seacrest posted a headline highlighting suggesting that Taylor had expressed admiration for her – ignoring Nicki’s comparable acknowledgement – and that the Pink Print Tour headliner had made a ‘jab’ at Taylor.

This morning, Marie Claire UK writer Corinne Redfern points out MTV’s history when it comes to VOTY.

To put it simply: When Britney Spears got naked and covered herself in sequins for Toxic, she was nominated for Best Music Video. When Emily Ratajkowski got naked next to Robin Thicke in Blurred Lines, he was nominated for Best Music Video. When Miley Cyrus stripped off and broke a million health and safety rules by riding a piece of construction equipment, she wasn’t just nominated for Best Music Video of the Year – she won it. All of the above videos have been controversial, but they were acknowledged by the industry for their impact nevertheless.
But as soon as Nicki Minaj – whose black body deviates from Caucasian beauty standards – dares to own her own culture and dance in a similarly provocative fashion, it’s glossed over and relegated to sideline categories of ‘female’ and ‘hip hop’. Meanwhile, white artists who adopt black culture as their own (*cough* Miley Cyrus *cough*) continue to reap professional awards. And it’s time to stop pretending that that’s OK.

Omari Hardwick Talks Power Moves

uptown omari hardwick july 2015

On an unusually chilly, late spring night in New York City, a mix of privy socialites, equally in-the-know nattily-clad gentlemen and surprisingly- excited media types have descended on Times Square—a district most true New Yorkers avoid, save for the occasional must-see Broadway show. However, this chic set has come to screen the first episode of the highly anticipated second season of Starz’ decadent and dopelaced hit drama Power.

Tucked away in the backseat of a dominating sport utility vehicle amid a parade of other black cars in front of the Best Buy Theatre sits the 5-foot-10, physically solid force that’s the beau of the ball: Power’s front man Omari Hardwick. And he’s in a zone. Tonight, he’s not his ruthless and conflicted character James “Ghost” St. Patrick—a drugdealing family man straddling the worlds of legitimacy and criminality. Instead, he’s the passionate, self-proclaimed geek that prefers penning prose and reciting poetry to partying. But, duty calls and he’s ready to deliver yet another impressive performance. He eyes the red carpet, hears the screams and knows his talking points.

It’s showtime.

Not 12 hours later, the fanfare has disappeared and Hardwick is on the other end of an early morning phone call. I receive a bare bones salutation. “My brother,” he offers coolly. He’s noticeably tired; but he’s a former athlete, so conceding to fatigue is not an option. He’ll only continue to push himself to victory. However, in Hardwick’s relatively short but accomplished career, a desire for winning the game has never fueled his ambition—it’s all about the plays.

“I thank God that my family villaged me as they did,” he begins. “They set a foundation that included character, honesty, heart and focus. This is what keeps my feet on the ground in this turbulent game.” Hardwick, 41, was born into a modest Southern family in Savannah and reared in Decatur, Ga. A young Omari hoped for a successful football career, however, he shelved his NFL dreams after experiencing a game halting knee injury.

Hardwick entered into acting, almost begrudgingly after experiencing highs and lows in New York City and Los Angeles and working what now seem like odd jobs to make ends meet. After a few resume building roles, he ended up with a feature part in Spike Lee’s Sucker Free City, which lead to a reoccurring role on the TNT drama Saved. “My takeoff as an actor really came from doing TV, though I turned my nose up at the notion originally,” he admits. “I’m glad that changed because I’ve seen shows become more and more special and there’s not an extremely large group of us that have been ushered into that.”

After notable portrayals in Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls (2010), Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed 2012 film Middle of Nowhere and BET’s hit series Being Mary Jane, with Power he’s breaking hearts and necks with relentless ease. “I was ready for Power. I knew about the streets, I understood nightlife and I even spoke decent Spanish, so it was only a matter of breathing life into the script.” Also starring a very capable Naturi Naughton, Power benefits from both exceptional writing (from the show’s creator Courtney Kemp Agboh) along with Hardwick’s charm, brawn and edge. Its fans find it just as addictive as Fox’s juggernaut, history-making series Empire, to which there’s no lack of comparison. Hardwick looks at sharing the spotlight as an honor. “I’ve wanted to feel what Idris Elba, Michael K. Williams and Wood Harris felt being a part of The Wire and sustaining critically-acclaimed TV. I’m proud to be for my show what Terrence and Taraji are for theirs.”

Our conversation stalls a bit when Hardwick has to acknowledge an eager fan who’s literally attempting to stick his head in the car with him and his family, which is where his protective instinct kicks in. “I don’t have anything to hide, but everyone doesn’t have to know everything,” he says, maybe vaguely alluding to the blogosphere uproar when it was discovered that he is married to Jennifer Pfautch, a former publicist. “I have to acknowledge that I’m more of a celebrity than I even understand at times. What happens in that moment [with a fan] will possibly follow me forever. But I also have to keep the mystique to keep them interested. It’s a double-edged sword, especially when social media often tries to put it all out there.”

Despite his numerous nude scenes on Power, Hardwick, who lives in New York with his wife, admits that he has to force himself to get more comfortable with his sex symbol status. Granted he works out like a machine and his body is the canvas to some impressive ink, but he tries not to get caught up in the hype. He laughs when asked about the nearly soft-porn sex scenes on his show. “They’re a lot easier to watch when my better half isn’t sitting next to me,” he jokes. “What I am proud of though, is that the writer makes sure that each time those scenes come on, they’re an extension of the story and she makes sure that they are choreographed and shot to be poetic in a sense. But today, I know I’m not sexy, unless unlaced Nikes, 10-year-old camo pants and stretch socks do it for you.”

Hardwick’s next chapter may be his biggest yet. He’s preparing to debut his first album of poetry with the help of celebrated singer/ songwriter/producer Eric Roberson and the first production from his company Brave Life Films: a biopic of Gil Scott Heron, in which he’ll play the legendary poet, singer and activist.

Omari Hardwick is playing the game by his own rules. “A lot of people speed. I don’t and if anybody asks me what’s taken me so long, I take a page out of my father’s book and with a wink I say, ‘I got here as quickly as I could.’”

It will be Kandi and Todd’s first child together.  They’ve been married since April of 2014.  Each has a daughter from previous relationships – Kandi’s daughter Riley and Todd’s daughter Kaela.

When it comes to celebrity in America, it seems you’re nobody until PETA comes calling. Dawn Richard, a former member of music group Danity Kane, is the latest celebrity to strip down for the animals rights group.

Richard bares all in the advertisement beside the slogan “Body by Vegan,” while munching on an apple. The temporarily-dreadlocked Blackheart singer shows off her beautiful tattoos in the ad. Although she went naked for animals, the ad campaign focuses on the inside of Richard’s body, not so much what she wears on the outside.

“I was devastated to find out that the food I was eating was so processed and so bad, and the animals were so mistreated and I was not happy and it made me immediately … go cold turkey,” explained Richard in a video interview.

(Hmm, this begs the question whether she still wears leather or silk, which like meat, comes from animals too.)

According to the PETA press release, “vegans are less prone to developing heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and obesity than meat-eaters are.” Richard was able to convince her father, Frank Richard, to go vegan by presenting these points to him, even though the diet change would mean they no longer enjoyed traditional New Orleans cuisine, like crawfish and gumbo.

“[M]y whole life has changed,” she said in an interview. “I get up earlier, I want to exercise, I feel better, my skin feels better—and these are things I didn’t even know [about vegan eating], coming from the south, coming from New Orleans.”

Richard joins a long list of celebrities who’ve teamed up with PETA, like Taraji P. Henson, Angela Simmons, RZA, and Forest Whitaker. Check out some of their images here. And watch Richard’s video interview with PETA below.

“I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I’m sorry, Nicki”

— Taylor Swift tweets an apology to Nicki Minaj after the two engaged in a Twitter beef following the announcement of the MTV Video Music Awards nominations. As a result of not being nominated for Video of the Year, Minaj called out the music industry and MTV for creating a disparity in which Black artists, women in particular, don’t receive the same accolades for influencing pop culture as their white peers. Swift thought Minaj was throwing shade her way and fired back, which perplexed Minaj. But now, everything is good between the two, and Minaj tweeted kind words to Swift.

The Talented Tenth Takeover

2015 black ivy event

By Kyle Helm

“When W.E.B DuBois spoke of a talented tenth, he didn’t mean a disengaged elite but those who knew the meaning of Sankofa.” These were the closing remarks of Bruce Lincoln, Founder of Silicon Harlem, as he accepted his Black Ivy Alumni League Pinnacle Award Thursday night. Sankofa is a word from the Akan language of Ghana that translates as “reach back and get it,” and by the looks of the sexy and engaged crowd, many are doing just that.

Wednesday night, about 500 of our brightest descended upon New York City’s Arena event space in the Times Square area for the Black Ivy Alumni Gala, a yearly fete that celebrates the achievements of the alumni of the country’s most elite colleges, and more importantly, helps to raise funds for educational scholarships, on campus student jobs, and teachers’ projects in NYC public schools.

Over passed hors d’oeuvres and an open bar, both recent and more “seasoned” alums from Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and Yale – as well as many other schools — came together to network, schmooze and maybe even try to make a love connection over the DJ’s string of hits.

This year’s honorees included Erika Brown (Columbia Business School), the Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion at Bloomberg LP; Steve Mills (Princeton), General Manager of the NY Knicks; actress Adepero Oduye (Cornell), most recently in “12 Years a Slave;” and Errol Louis (Harvard & Yale), Political Anchor, at cable station NY1. Bruce Lincoln attended both Columbia and Princeton.

“I love being a part of this, it’s great that we can come together and really give back to public schools,” said Mills, of the New York Knicks. “Going to Princeton was a great thing for me, and I want others to be able to take advantage of it.”
