Remember the days when at least one daytime TV show featured some sad sap using his one moment on the boob tube to propose to his “unsuspecting” girlfriend? Social media has pretty much killed the TV marriage proposal because folks just don’t need television to get their visage on someone’s small screen. However, unique proposals still get the applause they deserve, and one U.K. man just might have won the award for coolest yet nerdiest marriage proposal ever.
Matthew Dick, a British crossword-loving lawyer, hid his marriage proposal to girlfriend Delyth Hughes in The Times newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle.
Tuesday’s Times crossword opened with one across: “Pretty Welsh girl widely thought not to be all there.” The answer: Delyth. Another clue was: “Will you marry me,” say, that’s forward also rude!’, to which the eight-letter answer was proposal.
Speaking with the Wednesday edition of the paper, Dick, 38, said he showed Hughes the Tuesday puzzle with a few key words highlighted, and then “reached into my pocket to reveal the ring.”
“She looked so surprised and didn’t say anything for about 30 seconds, before then saying ‘No’, which she thought was hilarious,” he said. “But she did then say ‘Yes’ and I had to tell her this was the real Times crossword, not something I had printed out myself.”
“It was also bloody typical, as he’s a smart-arse at the best of times,” said a surprised Hughes. “I’ve heard all the engagement stories but this one trumps them all. It’s so special and such a geeky way of doing it.”
The Times crossword editor said this marriage proposal was a one-off occurrence that wouldn’t happen again.
