Todd Tells Kandi: “You’re No Rihanna” [VIDEO]

The Real Housewives of Atlanta newlyweds Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker have been married for almost one year.  Fans have seen the lovebirds go through highs, lows, tragedies and monumental occasions all before our eyes, and we’ve been rooting for the couple through it all.  But now, the honeymoon phase seems to be over, and the two are considering counseling.

In a sneak peak of a new episode of RHOA, Todd is not pleased with the fact that Kandi wants the couple to attend counseling sessions.

“I know things in the bedroom have been a little tough for me and Kandi, but is it that extreme?” Todd ponders.

When Todd questions Kandi about why counseling would be important to her, she confesses that not only is their sex life lacking, but financial issues may also be putting a strain on the relationship.

“My main thing is not enough sex…and then, business,” she tells Todd. “Can we have sex more than once a week?”

When Todd asks if the couple is “okay” financially, Kandi responds “Well, I’m okay.”

She admits that their musical, “A Mother’s Love,” was not exactly a success.  Both Kandi and Todd put the musical together last year, and it was supposed to run in 26 cities, but was only performed in 3 cities before the entire tour was cancelled.  The troubles were apparently due to issues with promotion.

Todd then mentions that a marriage will not work unless those involved are willing to compromise.  He adds that one thing he would like Kandi to consider is leaving her head wrap off at night.

“Let’s be real. I’m not Tyson Beckford and you’re not Rihanna. When’s the last time you didn’t have the bonnet on and you put some heels on?” he asks.

“Man have you seen a lady at night with a bonnet on? The most thirstiest dude wouldn’t get it up!”

Kandi wasn’t too happy with him comparing her to Rihanna.  “He’s no Idris Elba,” she shot back during her confessional.

White Models Walk Runway In Glittery Blackface

Uptown_Model-Glittery-Black-FaceA designer pushed things close to the edge during his runway show at Milan Fashion Week, as he had his models strut down the catwalk in glittery blackface. Claudio Cutugno put together an all-black themed fashion show, which incorporated the models sporting the sparkly black makeup. Cutugno was allegedly inspired by artist Emilio Isgro, who usually uses bees within his work, and Cutugno apparently wanted his models to look as though bees were swarming the their faces.

While Cutugno likely didn’t interpret his look as racist, one writer argued that the blackface makeup treatment is always culturally offensive. “I’m all for unique and interesting styles that command attention, but come on — you can hardly see the models’ faces. Not to mention that this is literally blackface, which is, you know, racist,” read the Bustle editorial.

Cutugno, 22, was named a winner of the Live Next Generation contest, and was chosen amongst five other finalists to debut his work in the presentation. Italian Fashion Chamber CEO Jane Reeve said, “I am hoping this is the beginning of a new phase, accelerating the growth of the new designers.”

Iggy Azalea On The Hip-Hop Community: ‘They Can’t Respect That I’m Actually Good’

Uptown_Iggy-Azalea-Zach-Sang

Although she’s seen huge success in the pop world, it’s been a rough road for Iggy Azalea as far as her acceptance within the hip-hop community is concerned. The “Fancy” artist has responded to criticism from rappers like Azealia Banks, Snoop Lion and Rah Digga.

The Australian lyrist recently sat down for a lengthy interview with Zach Sang & The Gang, where she addressed the criticism she’s received, as well as why she’s done with social media for good.

While there has been a lot of speculation about why Iggy might not get the same love as her White rhyming counterparts, such as Macklemore or Eminem, she has her own theory. When it comes to why she thinks the genre is pretty resistant to her, Iggy’s own explanation is pretty simple: everyone is mad that she is good.

“They know, deep down. I think they know,” she said coyly. “They just don’t want to admit it. That’s what I think. I have a feeling. That’s why they’re mad. Because they do know that I actually am good, and they can’t really accept that. But we could be friends, and this could all be easy. Or we could not, and I could send Bitcoin sh*t chocolate boxes to your door. But I’m still going to be here.”

Azealia, one of Iggy’s most outspoken critics, has never argued that Iggy isn’t a good artist; however, she doesn’t feel the T.I. protégé is worthy of the accolades she’s received from the American Music Awards, Grammys or other established organization honoring musicians.

“That Iggy Azalea sh*t is not better than any f*cking Black girl that’s rapping today,” Azealia told Hot 97 in December. “The Grammys are supposed to be accolades for artistic excellence. Iggy Azalea’s not excellent…All it says to White kids is, ‘You’re great; you’re amazing. You can do whatever you put your mind to and what it says to Black kids is, ‘You don’t have sh*t. You don’t own sh*t, not even the sh*t you created for yourself.”

This isn’t the first time that Iggy has addressed the hip-hop community’s issues with her, as she also once told Vanity Fair that she thinks the backlash has “100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vagina.” Despite her argument, other disapproving artists have had a bone to pick with Iggy over her misunderstanding of cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation in hip-hop.

Uptown_Kanye-West-Apologizes-Beck

It’s definitely a rare occassions when Kanye West admits that he’s wrong, and this seems to be one of those times. The “Only One” artist/producer broke another Twitter silence, and this time it wasn’t to go on a rant. He used the social media platform to publicly apologize to Beck and Bruno Mars. Kanye gave a long-awaited apology to Beck after criticizing him for not giving away his Grammy Award for Album of the Year to Beyoncé. He tweeted on his account, “I would like to publicly apologize to Beck, I’m sorry Beck.” Kanye already mentioned in his “Breakfast Club” radio interview last week that he wanted to talk to the musician about his comments, and give him an apology.

Next up on Yeezy’s apology list was Bruno Mars, who he admitted to having hated on for some time now. He tweeted, “I also want to publicly apologize to Bruno Mars, I used to hate on him but I really respect what he does as an artist.” He then offered Bruno an awesome music opportunity, where he would be adding his vocals to a track that he produced with Diddy and 88 Keys. He tweeted, “I also would love for Bruno to sing this hook on this song 88 Keys / Puff and I produced… I even asked Tyler to shoot the vid.” This apology also comes after `Ye revealed that he was eating dinner with Taylor Swift at a restaurant just after the Grammy Awards, when they started playing the Beck album, which he admitted to liking a lot.

This week, Kanye also sat down with Zane Lowe for an intimate interview, where we all got to see a brand new side of him. While speaking on Professor Louise Wilson, ‘Ye broke down into tears, after he spoke of the late fashion icon. While describing her legacy, he named her as the “greatest fashion instructor of all time,” and talked about their relationship, saying, “We had dinner at Hakkasan, which is my favorite restaurant in London. And I think she knew that she was going to pass, and she just wanted to give me some words of advice moving forward, and she was asking me about my daughter, asked me about my wife…And she said, you know, ‘So many students, they don’t give it their all, and the problem is, soon as they do anything halfway good when they’re two-years-old, three-years-old, their parents clap.’”

As he began to cry, he had to excuse himself briefly, but then came back to remark on how “that’s never happened to me before,” and it was difficult to talk about her. The interview also talks about his love for Drake‘s artistry, the high prices of his Adidas shoe, which he wants to lower, as well as the concept behind his new album. Hollywood lovebirds Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker are bringing their off-screen romance to daytime with the help of FOX. The Boris and Nicole Show will debut in select FOX markets including New York and Los Angeles this summer. The show will feature celebrity guests, as well as discussions on relationships and parenting. Though the debut is considered a test run, it may open the door for a permanent, nationally syndicated slot on daytime TV if viewers respond well.

The handsome Hollywood couple may seem to have it all on the surface, but have a few personal struggles that make them highly relatable. The two opened up to Exhale last year about their daughter Sophie‘s Spina Bifida diagnosis. “[Our daughter] doesn’t know any different and it’s up to us to prepare her and equip her for this life that’s hers and make sure that she has all options and all opportunities that anyone else would have.”

The two have also dropped gems about what has kept their nine-year marriage going strong, including staying sexy and fit together and letting one another vent.

The hour-long program will run for about four weeks on a preselected number of FOX stations with Kodjoe and Parker serving as co-executive producers under Kirschbaum Productions.

Anthony-Mason-BAt the age of 48, former Knicks favorite Anthony Mason has passed away. The news was confirmed early Saturday morning by a Knicks spokesman. According to ESPN, Mason suffered from congestive heart failure, a condition he was diagnosed with only a month ago.

Mason’s son Anthony Mason Jr. posted a heartfelt message on Saturday saying,

“First I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciates it. Overnight, New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother … but more than anything our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect our father — Big Mase — put up an incredible fight, dealing with a severe heart issue. I’m wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops we’ve got to let you know we love you and know you’ll always be with us.”

If you don’t remember Mason, he played for the NBA for a whopping 13 years. In his long basketball career he played for a total of six teams, but is most known for his 5-year tenure with the Knicks organization. While playing for Knicks, the 6-foot-7 forward shared the court with the likes of Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley. He played a huge role in the Knicks winning the Eastern Conference in 1994 and was honored with the NBA’s Sixth Man Award that year for his contributions.

RIP Anthony Mason.

Will Nene Leakes Or Khloe Kardashian Replace Kelly Osbourne On Fashion Police?

Kelly Osbourne may have quit E!’s Fashion Police only a few hours ago, but there’s already abuzz on who E! plans on replacing the Ozzy offspring with.

As you may already know, last week during the Oscars’ edition of Fashion Police, host Giuliana Rancic had some pretty offensive words in regards to actress and singer Zendaya Coleman’s hair. Kelly Osbourne who has been fed up with the direction and production of the show for months has had enough of the negative angle the show continues to take. In an act of ultimate protest, Kelly resigned from the show Friday.

Now that Kelly will no longer sit at the fashion table, word on the street is E! producers are already looking to two loud mouthed reality stars to fill in the missing seat. According to US Weekly, insiders are claiming that Khloe Kardashian and Nene Leakes are two very possible candidates.

Whispers of Khloe Kardashian joining the show have been happening for a while now. Not only was she a part of the Oscars special this year, but she’s also a member of the E! family. If the money is right, there may be a chance Khloe takes the gig.

Real Housewives of Atlanta’s favorite Nene Leakes has also come up as a possible replacement for Kelly. When Joan Rivers first passed, there were rumors that Nene Leakes would take her spot. Could this be her chance to get on the show?

Yeezus season is here and it looks like it’ s going to be a good one. Saturday night the rapper turned designer took to Twitter to make a big announcement about his forthcoming album. The emcee revealed the title and showed off the cover art for his highly anticipated new projects. Are you ready for it? Drumroll please… the next Ye album is titled So Help Me God.

The unveiling of the album comes after Kanye debuted two new singles off of his latest project. The first single entitled “Wolves” features the incognito Sia Furler and freshman Chicago-based emcee Vic Mensa. The trio performed the track during Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary.

The second song off of So Help Me God was debuted last week during the Brit Awards, during a performance that many are saying has never been done on live television before. You can hear the audio from his “All Day” performance below.

While no further details have been released about the album just yet, Kanye did stop by the Breakfast Club to drop this one tidbit saying, This album’s just embracing the music, embracing joy, and just being of service to the people.”

Can’t wait to be served Kanye. We’ll be waiting.

Mo’Nique Responds To Being “Blackballed” In Hollywood

mo-niqueIt’s been five years since Mo’Nique has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious, and there has been a lot of rumblings as to why she has not been able to get big movie roles since she took home the trophy. Chatter that Mo’Nique was “blackballed” from the industry began when Lee Daniels suggested that the award-winning actress was not willing to “play ball” and cooperate with promotions for the film, thus hurting her career in the long run.

Lee Daniels joined CNN earlier this week to clarify his statements saying,

“I love her (Mo’Nique), and I’ve spoken to her. And she’s brilliant, and I like working with brilliant people. But sometimes artists get in their own way — I know I certainly do often, I have my own demons that I get in front of myself… I think there were demands that were made from her on the Precious campaign, that everyone knows about, that hurt her. And I told her that.”

Later this week, Mo’Nique appeared on the Don Lemon’s show to address the comments made by former colleague Lee Daniels. She spoke on not having any demands when promoting the film and feeling like she did not receive proper compensation for her work. She also mentioned that she didn’t have the time to attend all promotion for the film. She went on to say,

“There was a request from the movie studio, and they called and requested that I fly to France for the Cannes Film Festival. I simply said, ‘I respectfully decline.’ Because if you can remember at the time there was a talk show called, ‘The Mo’Nique Show,’ I was doing a comedy tour, I was actually in the awards season of the awards, and I’m also a wife and I’m a mommy. So when they called, I had a couple of days just down time, I wanted to spend that with my husband and my kids.”

Essence Removes Relaxed Hair Story Following Backlash

$

Lupita_Solange_Viola_Oscars2015
It takes some courage for a woman, whose hair isn’t naturally straight, to choose her curls over what society has deemed the standard of beauty. It’s not an easy thing to decide to challenge what is socially acceptable and other’s preconceived ideas about how your hair should look. Women risk stereotypical judgments and side eyes that might occur as a result of walking down the street with twists, an afro, dreadlocks or any other ethnic look.

Some might question how much courage it takes to rock a specific hairstyle, but don’t doubt it. Zendaya Coleman can attest to the fact that women are vulnerable when they unleash their natural manes. She dared to do so with faux dreadlocks on the Oscar red carpet recently, and received the reaction many women fear. Unkind jokes. Scoffing. Laughter. Judgments.

The same can’t be said for women who have chosen to straighten or relax their hair. There’s little risk in conforming to the status quo and adopting an aesthetic that is widely more acceptable and less threatening to mainstream America, which is why a recent article published by Essence.com left many readers scratching their heads or patting their weaves.

The post, which was quickly removed from the site, was titled, “Why We Need More Relaxed Haired Celebs on the Red Carpet.” I admit the opinion piece was removed before I had an opportunity to read it, but according to reactions from those who visited the site before it was erased, the writer urged more encouragement for women on “their relaxed hair journey.”

To that suggestion, likely a response to the Zendaya uproar, Black women (and men) reacted with, “Are they serious? What the entire hell? Aren’t we supposed to be self-affirming? What the …..??????? Nothing wrong with relaxed hair, but what in the world kind of article is this?” and equally shocked and appalled rhetorical questions.

tweets_hair

The truth is that the encouragement to straighten hair, which most Black women have done at some point in their lives, is just about everywhere. With the arguable exception of Dove’s recent beauty campaign, there are few ads featuring glamorous women telling you to go out and purchase products to make your hair “kinky.” Even most companies that cater to Black women, boast products to smooth out the curls.

Minorities are “encouraged,” whether overtly or subtly, to conform to European standards of beauty from a very young age. Even the Gerber baby has straight hair. Those ideas of what’s aesthetically pleasing have also been passed down from generation to generation in Black families whose elderly members remember when looking as White as possible could mean the difference between life and death. Still today, the whole concept of colorism deals with the notion that looking more Caucasian leads to privileges.

“This culture has been pushing that in the minds of African-American women…for generations,” Ohio Senator Nina Turner recently said on Melissa Harris Perry’s MSNBC show. “Just think about this deeply. The notion that the hair you were born with is somehow substandard. The way that the Creator created you is substandard. Go back to the days of slavery. There is something fundamentally wrong with saying to somebody the way you were born is substandard, and you need to conform to be beautiful.”
UPTOWN_women_with_afro_main

That perpetual message—that Black women need to straighten their hair to be beautiful—has been “encouraged” enough in our society. It’s refreshing to see Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis and Zendaya boldly breaking the mold and walking the red carpet with pride and natural hair.

That’s the option that needs more encouragement. Those brave sisters shed any insecurities and rebuked the deeply imbedded ideas of what beautiful is to embrace their natural hair at an event like the Oscars. That’s not to condemn anyone for wearing her hair straight if she chooses; however, if those natural styles somehow touched a nerve and discouraged minority women from holding on to society’s beauty standard, which often excludes them, then so be it. Instead of seeking encouragement to conform, embrace the shift that allows women to be themselves.

Disappointed Thieves Return Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar Dress

Lupita Nyong’o’s stunning pearl-encrusted Oscar gown was arguably one of the most exciting things about the awards this year. Nyong’o’s stylist gave the custom-made Calvin Klein frock an estimated $150,000 price tag, which made the garment an attractive target for thieves who swiped the dress early last week. However, the culprits were disappointed to discover the pricey gown wasn’t as valuable as many thought – the pearls were actually fake!

On Friday, gossip site TMZ received an anonymous tip from a man claiming he had taken the dress from Nyong’o’s hotel room while the door was partially open. After taking a couple of pearls from the frock for appraisal, the thief was told that the gems were fake.

With this new discovery, the burglar decided the dress wasn’t worth the trouble and stuffed the garment into a trash bag, hiding it in a Los Angeles gym. TMZ  then shared the location of the dress with the LAPD, who found it hidden under a bathroom sink. The thief says he returned the dress, not only because of its lack in value, but because he wanted to expose “Hollywood’s fake bulls**t.”

“Once it’s returned to us, we will be able to have the dress restored and archived, as it now represents an important moment for the brand,” said the dress’ creator, Francisco Costa, in a statement to Women’s Wear Daily.

Three Los Angeles police officers shot and killed a Black man Sunday night in the city’s Skid Row area during a struggle over one of the officers’ guns, according to reports. Law enforcement authorities intend to use video captured by a bystander in their investigation of the incident.

The video captures cops arriving to the scene where they are responding to a robbery. They begin struggling with a man. One of the officers shouts that his gun has been taken and amid the chaos, five shots ring out. Onlookers begin to heckle the officers, urging that nobody in the area is armed.

The Skid Row district of LA, where the shooting occurred, is home to thousands of the city’s homeless – many of whom struggle with addiction and severe mental illness. No confirmed details bout the victim have been released by the coroner, but witnesses told the Los Angeles Times that the man is known on the street in the area as “Africa,” and that he had been staying there for about five months.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, head of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable activist group, is urging the Police Commission to evaluate use of excessive force by officers in encounters with the mentally ill.

In response to a lawsuit filed by the Rice family against city officials, a spokesperson for the city says the circumstances leading up to the Rice’s death “were directly and proximately caused by his own acts, not this Defendant.”

The city is also also justifying their claim by alleging the shooting occurred “by the failure … to exercise due care to avoid injury.” Tamir’s death is of special interest to the state of Ohio, given the nationwide sweep of unarmed Black men being gunned down by police or being victimized by excessive police force.

On November 22, 2014, Rice was sitting outside a neighborhood recreation center. Police officers arrived on location after receiving calls about a man with a weapon. Two seconds after pulling up to the scene, Rice was shot by Officer Timothy Loehmann. Rice succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the next day. Officer Loehmann is said to have a past of mishandling a firearm and was deemed unfit for duty by the Independence, Ohio police force.

The county is currently investigating the Rice shooting and presenting the evidence to a grand jury. These statements are in response to a separate suit filed by the Rice family against the city for the shooting.

An attorney for the Rice family responded to the findings Monday.

“What they said is incredulous at best. It’s unbelievable,” said Walter Madison during an interview with The Washington Post. He said the city’s response was further evidence of police arrogance. “There are a number of things that we in society don’t allow 12-year-olds to do. We don’t allow them to vote; we don’t allow them to drink. In court we don’t try them as adults. They don’t have the capacity to understand the consequences of their actions.”

Facebook Bullies Kill Black Teen Girl

uptown_keke_riceA long-brewing feud between teenagers ended with a 14 year old being shot to death and two others injured.

A group of girls had bullied Keke Rice since she was in middle school. Three weeks ago, the teens got into an argument on Facebook, and afterwards, she and some others decided that the harassment finally needed to end. Several teens on the west side of Birmingham, Alabama took to Facebook to discuss their anticipation of the fight. It was planned to be a group fight that would be recorded and posted on social media.

Keke’s mother, 33-year-old Alicia Rice, said that she told her daughter not to fight, as she did not have a good feeling about the outcome.

“I had told her it wasn’t worth it,” Alicia said.

Keke’s friends said she didn’t want to go through with it, but she was being intimidated.

“We told her she didn’t have to come if she didn’t want to,” said 15-year-old Destiny Senior, Keke’s cousin. “But they had said if she didn’t come out there, they were coming to her house.”

When Keke left Fairfield High School at the end of the school day on Friday, a male friend picked her up and took her to Washington Park, where the fight was to take place. A large group of people were there, waiting to watch the long-awaited brawl.

Alicia received a call that her daughter was not at the family house. She said she immediately called Keke to tell her to go home, and Keke said that she would.

“When we hung up, she texted me and said, ‘Mama, I’m sorry. But I’ve got to fight this girl and get it over with,”’ Alicia said. “I said, ‘Keke, I’m going to beat your [expletive] when I get home. If they don’t kill you before I get there,’ I’m going to beat your [expletive]. I knew. I had a feeling my baby wasn’t coming home.”

Alicia had a bad feeling that she would never see her daughter alive again.

“I just went to praying real hard,” Alicia said. “I’d never prayed that hard a day in my life. I said, ‘My baby ain’t coming home.”’

At the fight, Taser stun guns had been pulled out, and then there were gunshots.  “Everybody took off running,” said 14-year-old Arreonia Westry, a close friend of Keke’s. “I turned around because I knew Keke was behind me, and she was on the ground.”

Keke had been shot in the heart a little after 6 p.m. She was then ran over by a car as a result of people making haste away from the scene in a panic.

Keke was reportedly reaching for her cousin, and repeatedly saying, “my legs, my legs.”

A witness, then, picked up Keke and carried her over their shoulder to a vehicle.  They took her to Princeton Baptist Medical Center, where she died.

Two others were shot as well, however, reports say they are expected to recover.

Alicia is distraught that she will never be able to speak to her daughter again, as they often did. She blames social media.

“I’m going to miss talking to her. That’s who I talked to,” said Alicia. “Facebook. It just needs to go away. They don’t need it.”

Alicia said that although the feud between Keke and the group of girls was not over anything specific, she said that they were jealous of Keke’s beauty.

Keke’s friends said that she was the peacemaker out of the crew. She was a member of the ROTC and she was considering becoming a lawyer.

“She was sweet and kindhearted,” said Westry.

On Monday, 17-year-old Antonio King and 19-year-old Jason Wade were charged with killing Keke.

A Gofundme account had been set up to help Keke’s family pay for her memorial.

Remember the character Claire Kyle from the popular family sitcom My Wife and Kids?  Well, Jennifer Freeman played her, and a few years after the show wrapped, Freeman married NBA player Earl Watson. The couple’s relationship has been quite rocky, and now amid their estrangement and child support battle, Watson is saying that Freeman hasn’t had a steady job since the early-2000s.

The two have a 5-year-old daughter named Isabella. According to court documents, Freeman is demanding Watson pay $2,500 each month in child support, but Watson says he does not make as much money as she thinks he does. Watson retired from professional basketball in 2014, and he is now a coach for the NBA D-League. The 35 year old now reportedly makes $30,000 annually.

To explain why Freeman, 29, may be asking him for more money, Watson mentioned, according to L.A. County Superior Court documents, that she has not secured a steady job since her sitcom ended 10 years ago.

“She has not been employed on a full-time basis since appearing in the early-2000s on the television show My Wife and Kids,” the document reads.

He continued that she only occasionally books paying jobs, and her last gig was in November 2014 on The Real Husbands of Hollywood.

In Freeman’s defense, she says she is under a contract with BET that will not allow her to work with anyone else.

The couple’s relationship seemed problematic from the beginning. In 2010, Watson filed for divorce from Freeman after he claimed she attacked him. The alleged assault happened after she received a text in the middle of the night. Watson grabbed her phone to look at the message, and she reportedly proceeded to slap him. She then bit him in the wrist and chest, “breaking the skin, leaving teeth marks and drawing blood,” he claimed.

The couple reconciled shortly after the incident.
