A Delaware mother was arrested after her 4-year-old daughter brought over 200 bags of heroin to day care and passed them out to other children, thinking they were candy, according to police.

According to investigators, the toddler unknowingly brought the bags of drugs to the daycare inside a backpack that her mother, 30-year-old Ashley Tull, gave her. Police said Tull gave her daughter the bag after her other backpack was destroyed by a family pet.

When the staff at Hickory Tree Child Care Center on Hickory Tree Lane in Selbyville noticed children with packets of a powdery white substance, state troopers and medics were called. Police said a total of 249 bags of heroin, labeled ‘Slam,’ were found inside the backpack.

Investigators later determined the substance, weighing 3.735 grams, was heroin. Several children were taken to area hospitals as a precautionary measure and were released after being examined.

Tull was apprehended by police upon arrival at the daycare. She was taken into custody after being interviewed.

Tull, who is also the mother of a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, is charged with maintaining a drug property and endangering the welfare of a child. She was arraigned and released after posting $6,000 bail.

Blood Moon Returns to the Sky on Wednesday

UPTOWN_blood_moon_oct8

Early Wednesday, October 8th, the second and final lunar eclipse of the year will occur, presenting a fiery blood moon. The moon will appear a coppery red because of all the sunsets and sunrises around the Earth will reflect onto the lunar surface.

Unlike a solar eclipse, special glasses are not needed to view the blood moon, as it is safe to see it with the naked eye. Binoculars or telescope are recommended to improve the view, however.

Officially, the total eclipse will start at 6:25 a.m. ET (5:25 a.m. CT, 4:25 a.m. MT, and 3:25 a.m. PT) and continue until 7:24 a.m. ET (4:24 a.m. PT).

Those in the western and central parts of the U.S. will have the best view of the blood moon, as the total eclipse will be high in a dark sky well before sunrise. In the Northeast, however, the view could be obstructed by a storm system moving in from the Southwest. Much of the southern and central parts of the nation will have clear views under clear or partly cloudy skies. Thick clouds and rain could interfere with views of the eclipse in the Southwest.

Catch the blood moon while you can — the next lunar eclipse will be April 4, 2015, according to NASA. The next total solar eclipse that will be visible in the U.S. won’t occur until Aug. 21, 2017.

Hampton U President Blasts Government for Lack of HBCU Support

The President of Hampton University detailed the strained relationship between Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the federal government at this year’s HBCU Conference.

Dr. William R. Harvey, who has served as Hampton University’s chief since 1978 — one of the longest tenures of any sitting president of a college or university in the country — called out the government for continuously failing to realize the importance of investing in the leading institutions that educate minority students. Harvey cited decreased federal funding for research and development opportunities at HBCUs. He also blasted the government for its recent partnership between universities and philanthropic organizations to support low-income students that doesn’t include one HBCU institution.

In September, it was announced that eleven public universities, including Arizona State University, Georgia State University, Iowa State University, Purdue University, The Ohio State University, University of Central Florida, and six national foundations including the Ford Foundation and Markle Foundation had formed an alliance to help low-income, minority and first-generation students attain a college degree. No HBCUs were included in the deal.

“HBCUs were serving first-generation, minority and low-income students when some of these institutions were denying their entry or were not even in existence,” said Harvey, who also serves on the corporate boards for Fannie Mae, Trigon Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Houghton, Michigan.

Harvey isn’t the first to call out the federal government for its lack of HBCU support. Earlier this year, UNCF President Michael Lomax, Ph.D. also expressed his frustration with the lack of funding for HBCUs and called for a revamp of the federal financial aid program.

uptown_drakeToronto rap-crooner Drake is being investigated by police for allegedly threatening a Houston stripper to keep their sexual relationship on the hush.

The Young Money rapper, real name Aubrey Graham, allegedly had a sexual encounter with Jhonni Blaze once, but threatened her when he believed she would make their tryst publicly known. According to Blaze, the 27 year old began to “angrily” text her, sending several members of his team to her home and job. Police were told people banged on her door and threatened her life.

Blaze filed a police report in Houston, although the official document doesn’t name Drake specifically, but rather a “male celebrity.”

The former V-Live dancer went on record with urban gossip site MediaTakeOut, revealing her encounter with the “Started From the Bottom” rapper. She claimed they did not use protection during sex. She confessed she had deep feelings for him that she thought were mutual.

Sources close to the star told TMZ the reports are untrue. Drake has yet to release an official statement since the October 6th report.

Kelly Rowland and her new husband Tim Witherspoon will be welcoming their first child into the world within the coming weeks. As a part of the preparation for their baby boy, Rowland is documenting every step of her pregnancy. From her baby’s first pair of shoes before he’s even arrived to staying in shape, Rowland is sharing the excitement with all of her friends and fans. Now she’s sharing some of the first photos of her baby bump as her only accessory. With some help from her former music video co-star turned photographer Lance Gross, the former Destiny’s Child star bared it all in a tastefully nude spread for Elle magazine.

Rowland isn’t shy about showing off her body while pregnant and she shouldn’t be. After all she’s been putting in major work with fitness trainer Jeanette Jenkins with exercisesthat are safe for both mom and baby, like water aerobics. But working out isn’t just for vanity, Rowland said exercise also helps in the delivery room. “All the women that I’ve talked to, that have worked out, have such an easy and speedy delivery.”

She also shared with Elle her secret to flawless skin, not using products that contain chemicals. “I use nothing but shea butter, pure cocoa butter and coconut oil. It’s amazing how all of those things work so well for my skin,” she said.

Rowland’s not the first celebrity mom to share her pregnancy in the nude and like celebrity moms before her she thinks pregnancy should be celebrated. “It’s really — I won’t say amazing — it’s Godmazing (laughs) watching your body carry a human. I took a birthing class and I was amazed by all the things this woman was saying to me about birthing and what the body does naturally. Why wouldn’t you want to celebrate that? The body should be celebrated,” the singer told Elle.

Alfonso Ribeiro took it to the next level during his performance on Dancing with the Stars last night.  Finally, for the first time in year, he graced our lives with his infamous “Carlton dance.”

Ribeiro and dance partner, Witney Carson, were shown practicing their best moves and his thorough teaching of the signature move. The two used the classic song “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones with the backdrop seemingly similar to that of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”.<

The jazz routine to honor Ribeiro’s character, Carlton Banks, received a perfect score and a standing ovation. His performance satisfied all us 90s sitcom watchers dreams.

Initially he felt that the character stunted his career, but he later embraced it. I love ‘The Carlton’ dance now, I love how it makes people feel,” Ribeiro said. “My number one goal this week is to please the fans and give America what they’ve been asking for since the beginning of this show.

After receiving a perfect score, Ribeiro followed up with a quick “Carlton” dance lesson while his cast mates joined in. Relive the golden days below with his remarkable performance.

Video Catches NYPD Officer Pistol-Whipping Teen in the Face

Kahreem-Tribble-NYPD

The New York Police Department is under fire again this week for an Aug. 29 incident in which two officers punched and pistol-whipped a Black, male teen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The disturbing video shows the officers brutalizing the 16-year-old marijuana suspect, later identified as Kahreem Tribble, even though he had his hands up in surrender.

Tribble initially ran from the officers briefly, but put up his hands in surrender when they caught up to him. The first officer, Tyrane Isaac, swings at the teen’s face, but he misses. Tribble keeps his hands up. Officer David Afanador soon catches up with the two with his gun drawn and things get worse. Afanador uses his gun to pistol-whip Tribble in the face, breaking his teeth. Afandor leaves to try to find the evidence dropped by Tribble, while Issac is left to put handcuffs on the teen. Before doing so, Isaac punches Tribble and pushes him to the ground. The video ends with Afandor smacking Tribble in the face with a canvas bag, and a third officer, Christopher Mastoros, not taking action to prevent the excessive force.

The officers from the 79th Precinct arrested Tribble for possession of 17 bags of marijuana and disorderly conduct. Tribble plead guilty to a violation at his arraignment and was released with numerous bruises and broken teeth.

The officers are now under investigation of the NYPD Internal Affairs and Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson. Afanador has been suspended without pay. Isaac is on modified duty, but has been stripped of his badge and gun.

According to sources, Police Commissioner William Bratton has seen the video and is embarrassed and angered by the incident.

Police union president Patrick Lynch, however, is trying to spin a different story. “As usual, the video fails to capture the offense that resulted in police action or the lengthy foot pursuit that culminated in the arrest,” he said. Lynch failed to point out where in the NYPD handbook it says pistol-whipping a suspect is appropriate. Sources say officials are particularly concerned because Afanador’s gun could’ve accidentally fired, injuring or killing Tribble, another officer, or a bystander.

Both officers face criminal charges.

According to Tribble’s attorney, he was doing nothing wrong. “My client was minding his own business and they decided to chase him for no reason,” Amy Rameau said. “Their account is concocted to justify what they did, to cover their asses, to legitimize their criminal conduct.”

This excessive force incident occurred a little more than a month after the killing of Eric Garner, who died after NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in an illegal choke-hold. Officers suspected Garner of selling illegal cigarettes.

Indiana anesthesiologist Greg “Scott” Samson, 54,  killed his new wife Kelly Ecker, 50, and then shot himself mere hours after they said, “I do.” Details from Ecker’s disturbing 911 call were released late Tuesday showing that she feared for her life, according to WTHITV.

On the call, Ecker says, “He’s beating the s— out of me!”

“Who is?” asks the dispatcher.

“My husband,” she replies.

When the dispatcher asks her to identify her husband, she said, “Scott Samson. He’s got guns inside,” and then the line goes dead.

Samson and Ecker’s wedding was a joyous occasion until a fight between the newlyweds at their Terra Haute mansion changed the tone of the evening. The dispute grew ugly and guests were forced to leave the reception shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Once the last guest left, the bride and groom got into a heated dispute, prompting Ecker to call 911 in a panic claiming that her husband had threatened her life. “The investigation has revealed that there was a verbal argument between the couple toward the end of the reception, which carried over to the after-party at the couple’s home,” said Vigo County Chief Deputy Sheriff Clark Cottom.

Ecker made two more emergency calls, but both were cut off. On the second, gun shots were audible before the line went dead.

Authorities found Ecker with multiple gunshots to her torso and head with a 40-caliber semi-automatic pistol. Samson was found dead in the basement with a single shot to the head from a 45-caliber handgun.

The IndyStar reported that Ecker’s 10-year-old son from a previous relationship and an elderly couple believed to be Samson’s parents were in the home when the shooting occurred. The question still remains as to what started the argument that led to such an unfortunate outcome.

Sexual Harassment Rampant For Women In Restaurant Industry

uptown restaurant table setting

A report on the restaurant industry released Tuesday found that approximately 90 percent of women who work in jobs that depend on tips report being bothered at work by some form of sexual harassment. This is particularly a problem for women who work in states where tipped jobs have the lower federal minimum wage of $2.13/hr.

The report included in-person and online interviews with 688 restaurant workers in 39 states. It was conducted between May and August of this year.

“We need to eliminate the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers in the United States,” says Saru Jayaraman, co-director and co-founder of the non-profit restaurant worker’s group, Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC) United, which oversaw the 34-page report, “The Glass Floor: Sexual Harassment in the Restaurant Industry.” Only seven states pay the same minimum wage to tipped and non-tipped workers.

“Women who have to live off of tips are subjected to the worst kind of sexual harassment,” said Jayaraman in a phone interview with USA Today. In order to get tips, she says, many women “are forced to dress and act certain ways that make them vulnerable to customer, co-worker, and manager harassment.”

The National Restaurant Association dismissed the report. NRA’s VP of Communications Katie Laning Niebaum said, “These recycled attacks are part of a national, multimillion-dollar campaign engineered, organized, and funded by national labor unions and their allies seeking to disparage an industry that has no barrier to entry and no limit to what employees can achieve.”

However, the report’s key findings suggest that the NRA might want to take another look at what’s happening in its industry:

Your Hands-Free Car Systems May Be Endangering Your Life

$

UPTOWN_hands_free_car_systemThe hands-free mobile technologies in your car that are designed to help drivers use their devices safely at the wheel, may actually be dangerous. Researchers found that many drivers became distracted by poor service and misunderstood commands of the hands-free car systems.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. and the University of Utah conducted two studies. In one, they looked at infotainment systems in popular car brands, including Toyota, Mercedes, Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, and Hyundai. In the other, they examined Apple’s Siri voice system to send texts, navigate, make social media posts, and update the calendar without handling or looking at the phone. The systems were tested by 162 participants in three settings: laboratory, driving simulator, and driving through a Salt Lake City neighborhood.

The systems were graded on a scale of one to five, with one representing no distraction at all and five being akin to doing complex math problems and word memorization.

Siri got the worst grade with a 4.14 score. Two participants in the driving simulator rear-ended another car while using Siri. Chevrolet’s MyLink system also did poorly, scoring a 3.7. Toyota’s Entune program earned the most favorable marks with a 1.7 score, with Hyundai’s Blue Link system not far behind with a 2.2.

Apple noted in a statement that the study did not use their CarPlay or Siri Eyes Free applications, which are created for use in cars. However, the authors of the study contend that they consulted with Apple prior to the study.

The systems that did poorly were those that made errors even when the driver’s requests were clear and distinct. Drivers had to focus on the words they chose and the order in which they said them in order for their commands to be followed, causing a lot of frustration. For example, asking to change the station to  “103.5 FM” would grant your wish, but not “103.5″ or “FM 103.5.” Siri would mix up text messages or call the wrong number from the contact list.

“When these systems become more complex, like sending text messages or posting to Facebook, it pushes the workloads to pretty high levels and may be dangerous while driving,” said Professor David Strayer, the University of Utah psychology professor who led the two studies.

These complications contradict carmakers’ claims that these systems will help drivers to enjoy their devices safely and easily. In fact, the process can be quite dangerous and more distracting than simply making a phone call.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which regulates vehicle safety, has issued guidelines to automakers for dashboard systems and is developing similar guidelines for phone and voice-activated systems, but they are only voluntary.

“What we continue to see from customers is that they demand this level of technology in their vehicles, that access to music and access to calls is now a critical part of the driving experience and so we’re looking at innovative ways to provide that,’ said Chevrolet spokeswoman Annalisa Bluhm.

Woman Shot in the Head After Refusing Man Her Phone Number

You never really think that denying someone’s advances will be the cause of your death. Unfortunately, that was the case for Mary “Unique” Spears. Mary Spears, 27, and a family member went to Joe Louis Post 375 on Detroit’s east side to celebrate a deceased loved one’s life.

A man, 38, inside started flirting with Spears, asking her, “Can I get your name, your number?” Spears denied the man and responded, “I have a man. I can’t talk to you.” The man kept pursuing Spears and when Spears and her family were walking out, around 2 a.m., he grabbed and hit Spears. Spears’ fiancé confronted him and a fight broke out.

The suspect then began shooting. The family recalls him shooting Spears one time as she tried to run. Before she could get away, he shot her twice more in the head, killing the mother of three.  He continued shooting, injuring Spears’ fiancé and four others.

Detroit police assure they arrested the suspect and recovered his weapon. This brings little resolve to the family, though, as they’re still fearful. Belinda Bailey, Spears’ aunt, questioned, “What was on your mind that you could be so evil? Because she said no to you?”

While the family grieves through the tragedy, you can donate under Mary Spears’ name at Swanson Funeral Home, 806 East Grand Blvd. Detroit, Michigan 48207, (313) 923-1122.  Donations can also be made here through Go Fund Me.

Annie Lennox Calls Beyonce a “LITE Feminist”

Beyonce FEminist

Grammy-award winning singer, Annie Lennox, has spoken out against Beyonce and other fake feminists that she feels uses the term and the movement to lure in an audience. In an interview with PrideSource magazine, Lennox revealed her true thoughts about the singer.

Beyonce is a self-proclaimed feminist, particularly after her hit song Flawless, featured Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche‘s popular 2013 TedxTalk. At the MTV Video Music Awards in August, Beyonce’ posed fiercely in front of an oversized screen that displayed the now controversial term.

Annie Lennox

The Scottish singer acknowledged Bey’s talents as a musical artist, but she questioned her position as a feminist. She said, I would call that ‘feminist lite.’ L-I-T-E. I’m sorry. It’s tokenistic to me. I mean, I think she’s a phenomenal artist — I just love her performances — but I’d like to sit down [with her]. I think I’d like to sit down with quite a few artists and talk to them. I’d like to listen to them; I’d like to hear what they truly think.”

She also believes that Beyonce, and other ‘feminist’ artists only use the term to promote themselves. She continued, “I see a lot of it as them taking the word hostage and using it to promote themselves, but I don’t think they necessarily represent wholeheartedly the depths of feminism – no, I don’t. I think for many it’s very convenient and it looks great and it looks radical, but I have some issues with it. I have issues with it. Of course I do. I think it’s a cheap shot. I think what they do with it is cheap and … yeah. What can I tell you? Sex always sell. And there’s nothing wrong with sex selling, but it depends on your audience. If they’re 7-year-old kids, I have issues with it.”

What do you think? Was Annie Lennox out of line to police Beyonce and say who can and cannot be labeled feminist?

Erykah Badu and Riccardo Tisci have taken their talents to the tracks — literally — as they posed for the October 2014 issue of Paper magazine in the New York subway system.

The spread was shot by photographer Theo Wanner. In the issue, there are photos and a short interview with both Badu and Tisci. Tisci used this platform as a space to share his near obsession with the singer turned mid-wife.

Tisci, the creative director of the luxury fashion brand Givenchy, calls Badu his muse. He has even made her the face of Givenchy, saying that Badu is “the exact definition of style.” In the interview, he shared what it was like meeting one of his idols for the first time:

“The first time we met was at one of her concerts in New York a few years back. But the first time we actually connected was when she arrived to the set of the campaign. I was so nervous — it is rare to spend time with one of your idols, and she is truly one of my ultimate ones. She was nothing short of what I had in mind. She arrived with the most outrageous hair (a solo braid long to the floor) and an amazing hat. She was the exact definition of style according to me. We clicked immediately. We hugged and talked for so long, about everything and anything. And we share so much more than aesthetics … I love her.”

This little pint-sized cutie is Adrianna Kenebrew, an 11 yr. old legally blind gymnast whose tenacity overrides her diagnosis. When Adrianna was 5 months old, doctors diagnosed her with congenital glaucoma. She underwent over 12 surgeries and medical professionals were still only able to preserve a little bit of Kenebrew’s eyesight. At three years old, Adrianna was left legally blind.

When Adrianna gets on the uneven bars and balance beam, though, onlookers seemingly forget all about her disability–and she does too. The 11 yr. old super gymnast told Houston’s Fox26, “Every so often it occurs to me that I can’t see.” Along with her young willpower, Adriana’s athletic skill, coupled with her strong sense of her surroundings, is quite impressive. During competitions, she uses the same equipment as everyone else, with no extra help, and still receives high scores.

Asha Kenebrew, Adrianna’s mother says, “The gym is one of the only places where there are no real accommodations for her. Everything is the same. She gets on the same balance beam as everybody else. I don’t know, but I think that may be why she loves the sport.” Adrianna says she wants to be just like Gabby Douglas, but “I want to be the first visually-impaired gymnast to win gold at the Olympics.” When asked if she’d change anything about herself, the confident 11 yr. old taught us all a lesson in self-esteem: “No. I like who I am,” she proclaimed.

Police Pepper Spray Black Teen in His White Parent's Home

Parents of a Wake County, North Carolina teen are furious after their son was mistaken as a burglar and pepper sprayed in their home. Ricky and Stacy Tyler have been fostering 18-year-old DeShawn Currie for a year and don’t see him any different from their other three children. The police, however, do apparently.

A neighbor called the police when s/he saw Currie enter his home. Shortly after the police arrived, they confronted Currie. “They was like, ‘Put your hands on the door,’” said Currie. “I was like, ‘For what? This is my house.’ I was like, ‘Why are y’all in here?’” The officers questioned him about his belonging while pointing at a family photo that didn’t include him.

The parents shared their hurt with ABC 11 and said though they are still getting to know their neighbors. The Tylers said it’s hurtful someone would assume Currie was a burglar just for going about his normal routine of walking home after school. Stacy left the side door unlocked for Currie, who had gotten out of school early.

Angry at the officers assumption that he did not belong, Currie and the cops began to argue, which resulted in one of the officers pepper spraying him in the face. When Stacy got home to clear up the confusion, Currie was being treated by EMS. According to ABC 11, Currie chose the Tyler family because he wanted to feel safe and loved, but after this event, he doesn’t know if wants to continue living with the Tylers.

“Everything that we’ve worked so hard for in the past years was stripped away yesterday in just a matter of moments,” said Ricky.

The cops who pepper sprayed Currie said he brought the situation on himself because he did not comply with their instructions and became violent.

“I’m feeling comfortable,” explained Currie. “I had moved into my room, and I’m feeling like I’m loved. And then when they come in and they just profile me and say that I’m not who I am. And that I do not stay here because there was white kids on the wall, that really made me mad.”

So far, no charges have been filed.

Facebook To Release New App For Anonymous Messaging

Uptown_Facebook_Anon

Facebook is developing an app that would allow users to send messages anonymously. The stand-alone anonymous messaging platform would allow users to interact without revealing their real names.

A source says the point of the app would be to give people the opportunity to share thoughts that they may feel uncomfortable sharing with their real names. It would be similar to programs like Secret or Whisper, where people can post confessions and other private thoughts.

Traditionally, Facebook requires users to use their real names. This policy actually caused some controversy among its transgender users who found themselves locked out of Facebook as a result. In an apology to transgender members, Facebook chief product manager Chris Cox noted, “It’s part of what made Facebook special in the first place, by differentiating the service from the rest of the internet where pseudonymity, anonymity, or often random names were the social norm.”

Reportedly, this new venture is being led by Josh Miller, who co-founded the link-sharing app Branch, which was recently acquired by Facebook. The New York Times says the app should be released “in the coming weeks.”

Kimora Lee Simmons is expecting a child with husband Tim Leissner, reportedly. A source told People, “It’s true. Pregnant [and] happy — so far so good.”

The 39 year old is already a mother of three. She has two daughters with hip-hop mogul Russell SimmonsMing, 14, and Aoki, 12 — who are said to be “ecstatic” about having another sibling. Her son Kenzo, 5, is from her partnership with actor Djimon Hounsou. Their relationship ended in 2012 after nearly six years together.

Kimora and Leissner, a Goldman Sachs investment banker, were wed secretly earlier this year. Her ex Russell was actually the one to spill the beans on Twitter after rumors started flying about Kimora dating rapper Birdman.

Director Bille Woodruff has an ego.

It’s not just because he’s directed some of the most memorable videos of the ’90s—see a sexy Tyson Beckford in Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart” or a refreshed Celine Dion in “My Heart Will Go On” (once the most-played video of all time).

Nor is it because he directed his good friend Jessica Alba in her first starring role in 2003’s Honey, or that Latino model/actor William Levy is starring in his big screen adaptation of Zane’s bestseller Addicted (along with Beckford and Boris Kodjoe) this October. No, Woodruff actually credits embracing his ego to his father.

“I remember having a conversation with my dad about celebrities and their egos after having an unfavorable encounter in my days as a journalist,” he says. “My dad simply responded, ‘You have an ego too. You have to have one to do what you do.’ Because I’ve always had confidence, I embraced it.”

After moving from Executive Producer of Specials and Original Programming at BET, Woodruff planted his feet at the now legendary LaFace Records working his way to the director of the music video department, where he redefined sexy (yes, he was responsible for TLC’s creeping in those silk pajamas).

Now, many years, movies and iconic images later, Woodruff’s artistic acumen is still in overdrive: Along with Addicted, he also directed the VH1 sequel Drumline 2: A New Beat.

“I’m excited about both new pieces and I’ve learned to trust myself and my creative instinct like never before,” he says. With his work, Woodruff is committed to his signature aesthetic: enticing color and beauty, amazing production and stunning set design.

“I love to produce beautiful work. It makes me happy.” And Woodruff doesn’t take his glee for granted. “You only have the moment you’re in, so find a way to enjoy everyday.”
