Man Admits Eating Dead Girlfriend’s Organs

Joseph Oberhansley

According to court documents, a Southern Indiana man was arrested after admitting to authorities that he murdered his ex and ate her organs. Joseph A. Oberhansley, 33, is charged with the fatal stabbing of 46-year-old ex-girlfriend Tammy Jo Blanton, abuse of a corpse, and breaking and entering in the case.

After Blanton didn’t show up for work last Thursday, police went to her home to look for her around 10 a.m. When they asked Oberhansley about Blanton’s whereabouts, he acted suspiciously. According to a police affidavit, there was a cut across the suspect’s knuckles.

Officers reported finding a folding blade in Oberhansley’s back pocket, covered with what looked like blood and hair. After one officer walked through the house and called Blanton’s name, he eventually found her bloody body under a camping tent draped over the bath tub; her skull was crushed.

Police also found a plate with what seemed to be skull bone and blood on it, and a skillet and set of tongs with blood on the handles. Police said that Oberhansley admitted to removing several of his ex’s organs and eating them, cooked and raw.

When Joseph Oberhansley appeared before Judge Vicky Carmichael on Monday, he claimed that authorities arrested the wrong person. He told the judge, “that’s not my name. Obviously you got the wrong guy.” He said his name was “Zeus Brown” and that he didn’t know his age or if he was a US citizen. Carmichael said that he would be assigned a public defender.

Oberhansley is no stranger to the law. As reported by The Associated Press, he was convicted of manslaughter in the 1998 shooting of his then girlfriend, 17-year-old Sabrina Elder who had recently given birth to their son. He also shot his mother in the back and arm after she attempted to protect Elder. He was released in 2012 and has since had additional encounters with the law.

Urban Outfitters Apologizes For Offensive Blood-Splattered Shirt

UPTOWN_urban_outfitters_kent_state_shirtFashion retailer Urban Outfitters has apologized for selling a blood-splattered Kent State University sweatshirt, referencing the 1970 shooting in which four students were killed.

On May 4th of that year members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on unarmed students, who were protesting the Vietnam War on the campus. The shooting sparked a massive nationwide student strike, affecting public opinion over America’s involvement in the war.

The shirt, named “Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt,” was priced at $129. Urban Outfitters removed the pale, red sweatshirt complete with holes in it, from its website after its insensitivity sparked outrage.

The retailer issued a statement Monday, apologizing for any offense the sweatshirt may have caused. It claims that it never meant to reference the school shooting.

“It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such,” the statement said.

The company said the shirt was part of their “sun-faded vintage collection,” and the red splotch marks were the result of “discoloration” from the original red shade of the shirt. The holes in the shirt are the result of “natural wear and fray,” the company said, adding that there is no actual blood on the item.

Rapper Common‘s father, Lonnie Lynn, a poet and former NBA player, has died at the age of 71. Common said in an interview that Lynn died last Friday but gave no further details. Common made Lynn known to his fans by concluding his albums with Lynn’s poetry.

“The way he said things made me look at life and the world in a new way, in a different way. They always sparked a thought in my head,” said Common who shares his father’s name. “His words would always make me strive to achieve higher, to write better, to be more truthful with my words.”

Common opened up to UPTOWN in August about the bond he and Lynn shared. Although his father had a past of substance abuse and violence, Common accepted him anyway.

“He was always honest, acknowledging his flaws. He didn’t try to hide anything,” Common said. His father also introduced him to music. On each visit with his dad, Common said he would borrow an album from him.

Lynn, often called “Pops” on his son’s albums, reportedly recorded his last poem for the rapper’s 2011 album, The Dreamer/The Believer.

He closed the album with these iconic yet hauntingly ironic words:

“Live the life you believe. The American dream, the Black American dream, the universal dream. For the sake of the unwritten laws of humanity, I believe in God. I believe in my ancestors, I believe in my offsprings … I believe in the truth, truth. See you next lifetime.”

Our thoughts are with you, Common.

uptown-brycemastersA 17-year-old Missouri teen was put in a medically-induced coma for brain injuries sustained after a struggle with a police officer. Witnesses say that the teen, Bryce Masters, hit his head on the pavement after he was handcuffed and dropped on the ground by Officer Tim Runnels.

Officers from the Independence Police Department pulled over Masters, whose father is an officer with the Kansas City Police Department, on Sunday afternoon, regarding an outstanding traffic warrant for the owner of the vehicle. Police claim the boy refused to comply with the officer’s request to lower his window, while friends of the boy say the window switch was malfunctioning.

“The driver refused to exit the vehicle,” Sgt. Darrell Schmidli said reportedly. “A struggle ensued, a Taser was deployed by the officer. The driver was finally removed out of the car. A struggle ensued once he was moved out of the car.”

Witnesses say Runnels used excessive force to get Masters out of the car and placed his foot on the teen, “as if he were putting out a cigarette,” while the teen lay on the ground, helpless.

The Kansas City division of the FBI is currently investigating the Independence Police Department, but remains firm that that the authorities were within legal grounds.  Runnels was placed on administrative leave.

UPTOWN Lupita Nyong'O Sesame Street

A week after Janelle Monae sang about the “Power of Yet,” another woman of color has guest-starred on Sesame Street. Lupita Nyong’o stopped by the show to teach Elmo about skin.

The two chatted about its biological functions, as well as its special qualities. And when Elmo noticed Lupita’s glowing brown tone, she shared a lesson in self-love that is especially important for young Black girls–and everyone else–to learn.

This isn’t the first time that Sesame Street has used their kid-friendly platform to send positive messages to the masses. In 2010, the show featured the original song “I Love My Hair,” sung by a Black character. As she marveled at the versatility of her tresses, Black women and little Black girls rejoiced. (Some were even moved to tears.)

It’s inspiring that the show aims to drive home more than just numbers and letters, but also lessons in diversity and self-acceptance. Watch Lupita’s appearance on the next page.

More details surrounding Django Unchained actress Daniele Watts, her boyfriend, and their encounter with the LAPD have leaked. Watts said that she was arrested for kissing her white boyfriend. But eyewitnesses and photos suggest that “making out” may be an understatement.

In photos taken outside of the CBS lot in Studio City, it appears as though Watts is straddling her boyfriend, Brian Lucas. According to TMZ, a witness told them, “Brian was sitting in the passenger seat with his feet on the curb and Daniele was straddling him with her shirt pulled up–breasts exposed. The eyewitness said she was grinding on top of him, rocking back and forth.”

Prior to the release of the photos, Watts and Lucas posted their accounts of the incident to social media and gave an interview to CNN explaining why they felt harassed and defending their rights to PDA.

Occupy Wall Street Tackles Student Loan Debts

The Occupy Wall Street movement kicked off three years ago, in the summer of 2011. The movement was created to address the burdens that came as a result of the 2008 Financial Meltdown. Today, the group’s Strike Debt Initiative is making major strides. It announced Wednesday morning that it has absolved $3.8 million of debt.

occupy

The Strike Debt Initiative has tackled private debts head on. The majority of the country’s student loan debt is from the federal government. Collectively, students owe over $1 trillion. Although the group could not cover these federal loans, they eliminated the private debts of over 2,000 students at Everest College since January.

Everest College is one of the largest for-profit educational institutions. You have probably seen the commercials telling you to call in to kick-start your career. The college, ran by Corinthian Colleges, is set to sell or close its 107 campuses and leave its 74,000 students to fend for themselves. The Occupy movement is helping these students worry about one less thing.

The student loan debt initiative is the second one of the Occupy Wall Street Group. The money that is being used is from fundraising that has taken place over the past three years. The first initiative, successfully eliminated over $15 million of emergency room bills.

Adrian Peterson Responds To Being Barred By Vikings

Minnesota Vikings v St. Louis Rams

Flip flop, flip flop. The Minnesota Vikings deactivated Adrian Peterson for last week’s game after child abuse allegations surfaced against the NFL running back. On Monday, the team announced Peterson would be back in the game this coming Sunday. Now, the team has reconsidered their decision and barred Peterson from all team activities until his allegations are resolved. According to TMZ Sports, Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf announced they were placing Peterson on the NFL’s exempt/commissioner’s permission list.

“After giving the situation additional thought, we have decided this is the appropriate course of action for the organization and for Adrian,” the owners revealed in a statement.

Ben Dogra, Peterson’s agent, said the decision was “the best possible outcome given the circumstances.”

Just before midnight, presumably after receiving notice of the new decision, Peterson took to social media. Instead of posting a formal statement, he opted for an inspirational quote, which reads in part, “You were built to go through and leave the state of a rock and become a diamond! Eyes have not seen! Ears have not heard! … Dont [sic] allow any distractions to knock you off course!”

Peterson’s “All Day Foundation” is continuing its efforts to support its causes, but has gone offline in the midst of all the chaos. A message posted to the homepage informs supporters that the website is “temporarily offline to allow its charity partners to continue focusing on their outstanding community efforts rather than responding to the numerous media inquiries.”

You’ll Want To Live In The Nation’s Top Five Cities

UPTOWN_united_states_map

Settling on a place to live is a big decision with a number of variables. To cut out some of the headache, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from the 550 areas measured by the U.S. Census Bureau with populations of 65,000 or more. 24/7 Wall St. took into account all the factors we consider when buying a home — including crime rate, employment growth, and quality of school systems — and identified the country’s top 50 cities to live in.

None of America’s largest cities made the cut, as a result of high crime rates that automatically eliminated them from consideration. No surprise there. Additionally, more than half of them had poverty rates 33 percent above the national average. The research did, however, conclude that many of its top places to live were located in close proximity to major cities because residents were able to delve into the best of both worlds: good local schools and amenities, like tourist attractions, of larger cities nearby. According to USA Today, the following top five cities are 24/7 Wall St.’s crèmee de la crème when it comes to places to live!

5. Evanston, Illinois
Median Household Income: $68, 169
Unemployment Rate, 2013: 7.20%
Median Home Value: $360, 900
Violent Crime per 100,00 Residents: 304.7
Average Commuter Travel Time: 28.4 minutes

More than two-thirds of Evanston residents have at least a bachelor’s degree, which is among the highest educational attainment rates in the U.S. In 2013, secondary school students performed above average on math and language arts standardized tests. Northwestern University, one of the country’s best, is also in Evanston. With nearly 9,000 restaurants and 900 bars in the county, residents will never go hungry or be bored!

4. Pleasanton, California
Median Household Income: $112,665
Unemployment Rate, 2013: 3.70%
Median Home Value: $694,300
Violent Crime per 100,00 Residents: 68.2
Average Commuter Travel Time: 28.9 minutes

Pleasanton is considerably safe with less than 70 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2012. Students also receive quality education, and secondary students excelled in math, language arts, and science in 2013. The cost of living is very expensive. The typical home value of almost $695, 000 was more than all, but six of the 50 cities reviewed!

3. Mountain View, California
Median Household Income: $91, 422
Unemployment Rate, 2013: 5.00%
Median Home Value: $749,000
Violent Crime per 100,00 Residents: 204.1
Average Commuter Travel Time: 20.4 minutes

Like any ideal city, Mountain View had low crime rates, excellent schools, well educated residents, and a thriving job market. It is in Santa Clara County, home to many well-known technology centers like Cupertino and Palo Alto. The city features the San Francisco 49ers’ new stadium, and offers more than 3,000 restaurants and 216 gyms as of 2012. The cost of living is very high, as expected. Not only do residents have to pay California’s 7.5 percent sales tax, but the city also has a 1.25 percent sales tax.

2. Bellevue, Washington
Median Household Income: $91.449
Unemployment Rate, 2013: 4.70%
Median Home Value: $507,600
Violent Crime per 100,00 Residents: 127.8
Average Commuter Travel Time: 22.6 minutes

Bellevue sits across Lake Washington from Seattle and is home to a well-educated population. More than 64 percent of adults there hold a college degree, and youth have access to excellent schools. There was a 5 percent employment rise from 2011 to 2013, and only a 4.7 percent unemployment rate last year. T-Mobile USA, Expedia, Microsoft, and Nordstrom are among some of the city’s major employers.

1. Newton, Massachusetts
Median Household Income: $125, 642
Unemployment Rate, 2013: 4.80%
Median Home Value: $689,900
Violent Crime per 100,00 Residents: 87.6
Average Commuter Travel Time: 26.4 minutes

Newton is a suburb of Boston and ranked number one for best cities to live in! Crime rates are a mere fraction of 2012 national numbers, and unemployment remained below 5 percent between 2011 and 2013. Almost half of all children attend private schools, and test scores in the suburb’s public schools were notably higher than other public schools in the state. More than three-fourths of adults 25 years of age and older have a bachelor’s degree, the second highest rate in the U.S. Residents are privy to the county’s 49 golf courses, nearly 3,000 restaurants, 24 museums, and three ski resorts. The cost of living is more than most cities in the nation and in its state.

Adrian Peterson’s Suspension Isn’t A PR Home Run

$

UPTOWN_adrian_peterson

Last week, the media rightfully focused on the horrific actions of Ray Rice, and the deplorable response of the NFL, specifically the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell. Think piece, after think piece, after think piece were published about the NFL’s problem with domestic violence. The National Organization of Women (NOW) called for Goodell’s job. The Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers were both chastised for allowing players who were recently indicted on domestic abuse charges to play in their opening week games. And, in the middle of all of that, when most of us didn’t think it could get any worse, on Friday, Adrian Peterson was indicted on child abuse charges. I’m not sure if Goodell is a drinking man, but a week like that could lead anyone to Roger Sterling’s level of alcoholism.

Just yesterday, TMZ reported that Peterson was under investigation for another child abuse allegation, stemming from an incident that left another of Peterson’s sons with a cut on his forehead. The case went nowhere because it was discovered that the child hurt himself by accidentally hitting his own head on the car seat. After making Peterson sit on Sunday against the New England Patriots, the Vikings appeared to have made a strong move in disciplining their star running back — until they reinstated him Monday. But after absorbing a lot of backlash, the Vikings have decided to suspend Peterson again. This time until the court case has been resolved. Adrian Peterson’s suspension appears to be the right move, but the truth is that this situation, unlike the domestic abuse cases, is far different, and it isn’t the PR home run the Vikings may think it is.

One thing is unmistakable, the reason this story has legs is because it’s built off the back of momentary outrage at the NFL. #RayRice trended number one on Twitter and Facebook for the entire week, even amidst the United States going to war with ISIS. This child abuse story was a startling uppercut to a league stumbling around from continuous blows to the body — but that last punch doesn’t have as much force as many folks think it does, because they are clueless about how many Americans view whoopings and beatings as altruistic acts of improving child behavior. That previous sentence will anger many people, because they simply cannot connect how hitting a 4-year-old child with a stick and leaving him with cuts and bruises on his legs and scrotum could ever be considered an act of altruism, but for many communities that is a huge cultural staple in child development. And there’s such a huge gap between both sides that attempting to paint Peterson as evil will only obfuscate a very important issue.

Growing up, it was almost impossible for me to meet a Black kid around my age who had never been beat by their parents. My parents are West Indian, so when I hung around other West Indians, we understood that beatings were a regular thing. Some of my African friends had that experience too. That was simply our way of life and, in fact, it was much different in our day. Grandmothers, aunts, uncles, and even some neighbors were allowed to lay hands on our behinds if they caught us doing something we weren’t supposed to be doing. Being hit with everything from palms, to belts, to RC race car tracks was the norm. Hell, me and my friends still gather around to talk about how much or how bad we got beat — and we laugh our asses off at those old stories. When we think back about getting hit, none of us feel we were abused, and we definitely don’t think our parents were evil troglodytes who belonged in a jail cell either. They were the people who loved us enough to care for us, protect us, and discipline our little behinds today, so law enforcement wasn’t doing that job for them tomorrow.

Trying to paint Peterson as an abusive monster akin to Rice is a terrible equivalency. Trying to frame whooping a child as the behavior of the morally inept is a horrific leap in logic that will offend and anger many adults. Whenever the topic of spanking a child comes up, there’s always a crowd of indignant folks standing on the moral high ground of self-perceived perfect parenthood, who point their sanctimonious fingers at everyone saying “there’s NEVER a reason to beat a child!” This causes the other side to stubbornly dig in, because they will be DAMNED if anyone paints them as a bad parent when they believe they are disciplining their children to make them better people. And this is how some people actually view the Peterson situation. The more he sits on the bench and gets demonized, the more he becomes a VICTIM in people’s eyes. When many of us look at him, we don’t just see a strong, aggressive man, we see our parents, our grandparents, and even ourselves. And many of us are unwilling to paint ourselves and our loved ones as villainous child abusers.

But no matter how much we love our parents, the reality is that child abuse DOES exist. There are children who are not being lovingly spanked, but rather beaten down physically, mentally, and emotionally. But even though the photos of what Peterson did to his son are disturbing and many people who beat their children will concede that he went too far, there’s still a huge cultural difference in how people see that child’s wounded body. The “never raise your hand to a child” crowd believes that this is proof why parents should avoid spanking/beating their kid at all costs, while the “pro-whooping” crowd sees this as an example of going too-far, yet still not enough to discontinue hitting their child.

This issue cannot be intellectualized because it’s deeper than statistics, studies, and shaming think pieces written by men and women far from our individual cultures. Trying to make Peterson a monster who must sit out an entire month before a verdict, and more games on top of that is NOT a PR home run. He is NOT Ray Rice, he is NOT Greg Hardy, and he is NOT Ray McDonald. He is a father who loves his children, who unfortunately exercised terrible judgement when punishing his boy. I’ve never been a fan of therapy as discipline, but I truly believe that is exactly what Peterson, and many other parents, need. A look into the real effectiveness of beating, and an analysis of how situations can be handled by sparing the rod. Peterson does NOT need to burn for his sins, but we can make damn sure he’s contrite and he changes his outlook on discipline for the sake of all his current and future kids.

Singapore Airlines Has The Best First Class Cabin

$

Flightfox, a marketplace of flight experts, has compiled a list of the 24 best first class cabins from airlines around the world. Singapore Airlines tops the list with seats about $3,324.

The best first class list was determined by various components of the cabins, including seat configuration, privacy, aisle access, and, of course, food and drink selection. Singapore Airlines provides its first class cabin passengers with pajamas, Dom Perignon, and an ample amount of leg room. As if that was not lavish enough, its suites offer a double bed option — all while flying!

Ethiad Airlines’ Diamond First option currently placed third on the list. The company is expected to change the game, when it launches its new first class option, The Residence, in December. Passengers in The Residence will have a three-room suite, complete with a private staff, a chauffeur, and a personal chef.

Singapore Airlines Suites cost at least three-times the price of some of their competitors for a one-way ticket. Cathy Pacific First Class Suites start at $713, Emirates First Class Suites start at $824, and Ethiad Diamond First start at $911. Lufthansa First Class came in at number five on the list of overall best first class experience, but its price for a one-way ticket starts at $5,520.

The most expensive first class seat can be purchased on ANA First Square for $9, 640. American Airlines and British Airways were also some of the most expensive airlines, but their service and overall score came in at the bottom of the list.

Iggy Azalea: The Fancy Porn Star?

UPTOWN_iggy_azalea

In her Billboard #1 song, “Fancy,” Australian-born pop star Iggy Azalea raps, “keep turning it up … film star, yeah I’m deluxe.” We’re unsure what type of film Azalea was referring to on this track, but her very own adult film may be coming to a screen near you soon.

Five years ago Azalea, born Amethyst Amelia Kelly, singed a legally binding contract with then-manager and boyfriend Maurice Williams (aka Jefe Wine). The contract granted the Houston-rapper with the right to cut her records and music videos. While the contract did not specifically grant Wine the right to sell and market a sex video, the court could easily interpret the overboard language as encompassing the right to sell and market their sex tape. The contract’s language states that Williams has the right to “manufacture, sell, distribute and advertise any recording embodying visual images.” According to sources, Vivid Entertainment, the same company that released Kim Kardashian’s sex tape is offering seven figures for Azalea’s tape.

UPTOWN_jeffe_wine_iggy_azaleaThis afternoon Azalea filed a federal lawsuit against Williams. In her complaint Azalea claims that throughout the course of their relationship, Williams illegally downloaded the entire contents of her personal computer, including unreleased master recordings. This year, Williams released several such recordings and now Azalea is suing on the grounds of copyright infringement. She’s also alleging conversion of stolen information from her computer. While the suit makes no mention of the alleged sex tape, Azalea also claims that any contracts referenced by Williams are forged.

This summer Azalea reached a historic milestone by becoming the fourth solo female rapper to top Billboard’s Hot 100. New historic legal milestones may be reached soon as well. Stay tuned …

Kerry Washington Joins Purple Purse Campaign

Kerry WashingtonKerry Washington is the brand ambassador for the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Campaign, which raises awareness for financial abuse, a tactic domestic abusers use to gain leverage over their victims.

Financial abuse typically involves a victim’s limited access to funds, preventing them from getting out of an abusive situation. Career sabotage or putting the person in debt is another tactic an abuser may implement in the efforts to silence a victim.

“I think people just aren’t as aware of financial abuse,” Washington said. “If a woman isn’t even aware of the dynamics of financial abuse—what it looks like, what it is—she may not even know that that’s part of the tools being used to control her and manipulate her and keep her trapped. When there is more information around it, people can begin to identify it and then get the help they need.”

To help raise awareness, Washington helped to design a line of limited-edition purple purses. Only 500 purses were produced and most will be given to charities and used for fundraising.

“For me, one of the things I wanted to combine was this idea of elegance and classic traditional design, with something kind of funky and fashion-forward,” Washington stated.

Ariana Grande: Diva in Training?

Ariana Grande has tried to distance herself from the frequent comparisons to Mariah Carey, going as far as requesting that she not be asked about her in interviews, but it looks like her diva antics are only making the similarities more apparent. However, unlike Carey, people in the industry feel that her behavior is premature and undeserved.

Grande’s debut, Yours Truly, scanned gold last week, which pales in comparison to her pop predecessor Mariah, who was edging near a diamond certification at Grande’s age.

E! host Giuliana Rancic shared an experience she had with the starlet at the American Music Awards last November.

“I feel like where there is smoke, there is fire,” Rancic said of her red carpet interview, alleging that Grande’s team bullied and elbowed her to change positions, so that Grande could be filmed on her left side. “It was like you either get on the other side or we don’t do an interview.”

Rancic, 40, continued, “It’s one thing if it’s Mariah [Carey]. I’ll get on any side. I’ll bend down. I’ll climb a ladder … I’ll do whatever it takes. But when you’re new on the block, trying to earn your stripes … You gotta do what you gotta do. Try to earn a great reputation, try to go overboard to please people.”

During a recent press day in Australia, media outlets were given a list of off-limits interview topics which, aside from Carey, including her grandfather’s death and dating/relationships, among other things. (Although her boyfriend, rapper Big Sean, recently confirmed they are romantically involved.)

Page Six reports that an insider compared Grande’s demands to that of the president and alleged, “She kind of speaks down to everyone around her.”  The source added, “Everyone is kind of stressed and at the same time, they’re making fun of her because it’s much ado about nothing, really.”

“Who wouldn’t want to be treated like a bimbo doll?” asked Wild. “It’s such a sexy look.”

Wild’s boyfriend made all surgeries possible. He paid thousands for her new look, which she says has helped her career.

“I get more glamour model work because of how I look too. I would love to become famous for being a sex doll,” Wild said.

Nick Cannon is taking “I Rock Tom Ford” to a whole new level. The 33-year-old host of America’s Got Talent debuted a custom pair of Tom ford diamond encrusted shoes on the show’s finale , where magician Mat Franco took the crown for Season 9 in New York.

The glitz was the product of renowned Beverly Hills designer, Jason the Jeweler. Jason Arasheben told WWD that Nick a Cannon approached him a year ago with plans to make his fancy footwear a show stopper this year. He said, ““Not very often do I get a request for the most expensive shoes in the world. When Nick approached me last year, he said he wanted to make history and be so over-the-top.”

Well, he succeeded. The shoes cost $2 million and took over 2,000 hours to make. Each of the 14,000 diamonds had to be shaped perfectly so that it could fit on the shoe. The studded pair is now being considered for the Guinness Book of World Records for the most valuable pair of shoes.

Standard Hotel Security Wrongfully Accuses Black Women Of Prostitution

uptown_blackwomenprostitutionDuring a girl’s night out, a trio of professional African-American women were accused of soliciting prostitution, after a group of men offered to buy them drinks.

In August, attorney Kantaki Washington and her two friends, Cydney Madlock and J. Lyn Thomas, visited Le Bain, the roof top bar atop The Standard Hotel in New York.

“After the security guard ushers the brotha away, he comes over to me and my friends and says, ‘Come on, ladies. You can buy a drink but you can’t be soliciting,” Washington said in an interview, describing the racial profiling incident. “We were like, soliciting? He said, ‘Don’t act stupid with me, ladies. You know what you’re doing. Stop soliciting in here. We were like, ‘Soliciting what?’”

“Dude, I’m a lawyer and these women are educators,” she said in reply. “Why the hell would I be in here soliciting prostitution?” Washington said the guard answered, “I don’t know but that’s what you’re doing.”

Washington notified management to complain, and she was told the security guard was an outsourced employee, and therefore not technically on The Standard Hotel staff. Weeks later, she received an email offering herself and three guests “back to The Standard for a bottle of champagne in The Top of The Standard or Le Bain, followed by dinner for 4 (valued at $400) at The Standard Grill.”

The ladies declined the offer, stating, “We all have careers. That’s nothing. We can afford that ourselves.”

Do you think race played a role in the security guard’s assumption that the women were prostitutes? Would you have accepted the bottle of champagne and dinner as compensation? Does it matter that the security guard was an outsourced employee?

Vice President Joe Biden is no stranger to putting his foot in his mouth. Beginning before his campaign with President Obama, Biden has been on record for saying some pretty off-the-wall, and often offensive remarks. Here is a list of some of the most memorable (and shocking) Joe Biden political gaffes.

1. September 16, 2014: Biden uses the antisemitic phrase “shylocks” while speaking to a Jewish group at the Legal Services Corporation 40th Anniversary.

2. September 16, 2014: Speaking in Iowa, Biden referred to Asia as “the Orient,” which is an outdated colonial term for the continent.

3. June 17, 2006: “In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India,” said Biden. “You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”

4. April 30, 2009: “I would tell members of my family, and I have, I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places right now. It’s not that it’s going to Mexico, it’s that you are in a confined aircraft,” said Biden as he unduly alarmed people of flying or riding in subway cars for fear of swine flu. “When one person sneezes, it goes everywhere through the aircraft. That’s me.”

5. September 2013: Biden calls gay marriage “the issue of our day” at an Iowa fundraiser, which forced President Obama to reveal his evolution on the issue days later.

6. Jan. 31, 2007: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man,” said Biden on Pres. Obama. This description obviously drew scrutiny.

7. March 23, 2010: “This is a big fucking deal!” said Biden while wearing an open mic to congratulate Pres. Obama during the signing of universal health care in Washington, D.C.

8. January 21, 2009: “Am I doing this again? For the senior staff? My memory is not as good as Chief Justice Roberts’.” Biden makes fun of Justice Roberts swearing in of Pres. Obama in Washington, D.C.

A former intensive care unit patient claims a sex crazed female nurse took advantage of him while he was heavily medicated, awaiting a heart transplant. John Cantone, 60, a patient at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois is accusing Rachel Shaper of initiating unsolicited sexual relations, including intercourse.

It began on October 12, 2012, when the 33 year old nurse approached Cantone while he was medicated with various drugs and monitored electronically. Cantone accuses the medical center of failing to properly supervise Shaper, leading not only him to being sexually abused but other patients as well.

As his lawsuit states, Shaper “had attempted and/or succeeded” in initiating similar contact with other patients in her care.

State records reveal Shaper was fired from the hospital for “crossing professional boundaries with a patient.” She was disciplined in January by state officials for failing to report her termination.

Cantone and wife, who is also listed as a co-plaintiff in the lawsuit, seek $200,000 in damages.
