Marissa Alexander has been denied the ability to use Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground defense for a second time in court. Circuit Judge James H. Daniel denied her request for a new hearing on the basis that warning shots “cannot be applied retroactively” to the new June revision. Judge Daniel stated that the basis of Alexander’s claim and Gray’s claim did not change in the new evidence presented.

Alexander, an African-American, was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing what she said was a warning shot near her abusive husband Rico Gray and his two sons in 2012. That ruling fell under the guidelines of Florida’s “10-20-Life” law, which requires a minimum ten year sentence for a crime committed with a gun. She was previously denied immunity in the first case when Judge Daniel found “insufficient evidence that [Alexander] reasonably believed deadly force was needed to prevent death or great bodily harm to herself. ”

The Stand Your Ground law was previously used as a defense in the trial against George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin. Angela Corey oversaw that trial, who defended the sentencing in the Alexander case. “…one of the reasons is because the bullet went through the wall where one of the children was standing. It happened to deflect up into the ceiling, but if it had deflected down it could have hit one of the children,” Corey said at the time.

Supporters of Alexander have started the Free Marissa Now campaign and condemned Corey for trying to prove a point with Alexander’s case to shield herself from the mishandling of the Zimmerman trial and shooter of Jordan Davis.

Marissa Alexander is currently out on bond until her new trial starts July 28. She may face up to 60 years if convicted.

General Motors announced six recalls on June 23, involving 717,950 newer-model cars in the United States, for a variety of defects, adding to what seems to be an ever growing list of GM recalls this year. The July announcement brings the total to over 60 recalls in 2014 with 29 million cars worldwide that have been recalled by the company.

The recall this time isn’t for the ignition switch like in the recall in late June that involved older Chevy Malibu and five other models. Instead there are problems with the seats, airbags, and turn signals, parts that may not have been welded together properly, and a loss of power steering, according to the Washington Post. Models affected are the
2011 and 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, recent model Chevrolet Caprices, Silverado LD and HDs, Cadillac ATS and CTS, and a number of other car models. Some models have been recalled previously, which is why the total of recalled cars remained at about 29 million worldwide after the six new recalls.

GM has knowledge of one crash and three injuries linked to a defect with the front and passenger seats. The June recall involving an ignition switch defect may be linked to 13 deaths and may have affected 8.45 million vehicles.

Jeff Boyer, the newly-appointed global safety chief, said GM is focused on enhancing safety with the recent recalls. However, this latest round of recalls could affect the bottom line for the car company, but “ultimately the market will judge,” said Erica Ibara, director of residual values for Kelley Blue Book. Recently GM spent $1.3 billion in the first quarter to cover costs.

A postal worker from the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan was charged with four crimes, including assault, for going postal on a Financial District salon worker. Rachel Myers allegedly threw a curling iron stand at the hairstylist, who apparently was too slow in untying her hair knots.

Myers, 26, was wearing her full U.S. Postal Service uniform when she visited the Century 27 Beauty Salon as a walk-in on her break. The appointment that was supposed to take a little more than an hour turned into 30 minutes of chaos, when Myers fell into a sudden, violent rage.

The hot curling stand she threw allegedly hit two customers instead of the stylist. One of the salon clients is related to a cop. After going off on the salon staff, Myers kicked down the front door, when she was unable to open it. She was caught by police after she ran down the street.

Myers was arrested on July 18 and charged with four misdemeanors. She was released without bail on July 20. She is due back in court September 10. There’s no word yet on whether the USPS will terminate her.

After publicly begging and dedicated songs and even an album to his estranged wife, Robin Thicke is waving a white flag at marriage and is moving on. However, neither Thicke nor his soon-to-be ex-wife Paula Patton has filed for divorce or hired divorce lawyers to end their nine-year union. But an attorney is already in the process of separating the couple’s financial assets.

Recently, Thicke has put their 3,158 sq. ft. Bel Air home, complete with a recording studio, up for sale for $2,985,000. Patton hasn’t lived in their former love nest since they separated. However, Thicke says he won’t file for divorce and Patton will have to do it, if that’s what she wants. But he’s done begging and is moving on.

It seems Thicke took our advice that when a woman becomes indifferent, the relationship is finished.

Sierra Leone Chief Doctor Sheik Umar Khan, who has treated more than 100 patients infected with Ebola, has contracted the deadly virus himself. It’s unclear of how Dr. Khan contracted the virus, as he religiously wore special footwear, overalls, gloves, and masks. Three nurses who worked alongside the doctor have died from the virus.

Dr. Khan was named a “national hero” by the health ministry for his work against the virus. There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, the virus that has claimed 206 lives in the west African country, Sierra Leone. The disease kills up to 90 percent of those it infects, although the rate of mortality for the current outbreak is 60 percent.

The Ebola outbreak began in southeast Guinea in February and has spread across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and 632 people have died from the illness. The outbreak is putting a great strain on the health systems of some of Africa’s poorest countries.

Symptoms of the highly infectious disease are diarrhea, vomiting, and internal and external bleeding.

Within one day of each other, two international planes have crashed.

TransAsia Airways flight GE222 crashed late Wednesday evening, while attempting to land in stormy weather. Forty-seven passengers are feared dead, out of 54 total passengers and four crew members. The weather from Typhoon Matmo had been tumultuous in Taiwan when flight GE222 was to land. The pilot was given the green light to land, despite hazardous weather and heavy rain, as two planes landed successfully prior to flight GE222.

President Ma Ying-jeou called it “a very sad day in the history of Taiwanese aviation,” and ordered authorities to quickly clarify the details, said a spokesman for his office.

An MD-83 Swiftair aircraft

An Air Algerie flight also crashed on Thursday after disappearing off radar approximately 50 minutes after takeoff. The MD-83 Swiftair aircraft was en route to Algiers from Burkina Faso. Of the 116 casualties, six were members of the flight crew.

The pilot requested to change course after encountering heavy thunderstorms with frequent lightning. After the plane fell off the radar, the French military sent two jets to locate the plane. The plane went down about 40 miles from the Malian city of Gao. The military did not give any additional details.

Lifetime’s biopic starring “America’s Next Top Model” alum Yaya DaCosta has Whitney Houston‘s mother up in arms.

The biopic centers around Houston’s legendary yet controversial marriage with Bobby Brown, with whom she had daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mom, told ETOnline.com:

“Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family’s objections. No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby. In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please, please let her rest.”

Whitney Houston will premiere in early 2015, three years after her tragic death. Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, who co-starred along with Whitney in Waiting to Exhale, is directing the film. Bassett had to have known Houston in some regard if they made a movie together.

 The wait is over. NBC’s Today Show premiered the hot and steamy trailer of  E.L. James‘  50 Shades of Grey on Thursday.  The trailer comes after Beyonce released a short snippet on Instagram featuring a sexier, more moan-y version of her song Crazy In Love.  The self-titled album, Beyonce, revealed a more sexual side of the former Destiny’s Child member, causing many to criticize its explicit content. 

When asked about her most “sexually liberated album to date” she told Out Magazine, “There is unbelievable power in ownership, and women should own their sexuality. There is a double standard when it comes to sexuality that still persists. Men are free and women are not. That is crazy. The old lessons of submissiveness and fragility made us victims. Women are so much more than that. You can be a businesswoman, a mother, an artist, and a feminist—whatever you want to be—and still be a sexual being. It’s not mutually exclusive.”

Gladiators unite! Cast members of the hit ABC drama “Scandal” are back at work and ready to get scandalous.

Show creator Shonda Rhimes gave a sneak peek of the cast table read that included new mom Kerry Washington. Rhimes posted a photo on her WhoSay account of Washington giving the camera a smirk with the script covering part of her face. Rhimes captioned the pic, “Our own @kerrywashington at the #scandal table read! We are just starting the read!!”

Gladiators, there’s no telling what Rhimes and her crew have in store for this season, but what we do know is Columbus Short won’t be included. Perhaps he should seek Olivia Pope & Associates for some guidance in getting his career back on track.

Owning a record label is just not enough for Lil Wayne and he is starting his own sports management company. Of course, Lil Wayne’s sports agency’s first client is the No. 1 soccer player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo and Lil Wayne are friends and have talked about this big move for a while.

Lil Wayne’s sports agency will work alongside Cristiano’s agent Jorge Mendes under PolarisSports, which is affiliated with the CAA Agency. CAA also represents newly-signed Carmelo Anthony. Lil Wayne will be in charge of “any branding affairs dealing with Ronaldo in the United States.”

Ronaldo seemed excited and tweeted a picture of him holding up the YMCB sign with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe. In 2014, Time named Ronaldo one of The World’s Top 100 Influential People.

An Alabama man is suing a hospital for mistakenly amputating his penis. In what was scheduled to be a simple circumcision appointment, turned out to be a horrific mistake.

Johnny Lee Banks Jr. of Birmingham and wife, Zelda Banks, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday against two doctors, a medical clinic, a urology group and the hospital for medical malpractice.

The lawsuit says Banks went to Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham last month for a circumcision. The suit alleges when he awoke, his penis was gone. Banks is suing for extreme pain and suffering.

In a surprising reply, the hospital is claiming his lawsuit lacks merit. It sounds like a black and white case, right? Either they did, or didn’t make the mistake. Nevertheless, Banks is suing for an unspecified dollar amount.

The defendants in the case would not comment when contacted.

Despite actress Zoe Saldana‘s refusal to confirm her pregnancy, sources close to the Guardians of the Galaxy star have revealed she is indeed pregnant with twins.

Saldana, 36, has quite a busy few years ahead of her, with the pending birth of twins and her successful acting career. She signed on for three more Avatar sequels and a starring role in the movie Star Trek.

The Cuban beauty has been sporting an obvious baby bump for the past few weeks, but has yet to acknowledge it. “Zoe is about three months pregnant,” the insider told US Weekly of the Rosemary’s Baby actress. “But she will only announce the news when she’s ready.”

The mom-to-be has been making rounds this week to promote Guardians, but has creatively attempted to camouflage her growing bump on the red carpet. On Monday, July 21, she kept onlookers guessing with a printed frock.

Saldana married Italian artist Marco Perego one year ago in a secret ceremony.

Will the real Boobie please stand up? Keyshia Cole‘s husband Daniel Gibson had some explaining to do when news broke that he filed for divorce before she could. But it turns out the papers were filed by an impostor.

TMZ reported that Gibson filed divorce papers in the L.A. Superior Court, despite publicly begging his wife for forgiveness and posting subliminal messages on social media to save his marriage. The papers looked standard, according to TMZ, and cited irreconcilable differences. But the ex-Cleveland Cavalier listed himself as his attorney, which prompted further investigation by the gossip site.

The address listed on the court documents was traced back to an El Pollo Loco restaurant in L.A. The phone number listed was called and answered by someone claiming to be Gibson.

The real Gibson was contacted by TMZ and declared, “She would have to do it. I am a Christian. I believe in till death do us part.”

The former NBA star plans on filing charges against the poser.

As far as Cole is concerned, it’s reported she still plans to move forward with a divorce.

Chocolate lovers, you’re going to have to shell out a little more cash to satisfy your sweet tooth. Hershey Co. is expecting its first price hike in three years. The chocolate giant says the price increase could chew up short term sales, but chocolate’s popularity will prevail over the long haul.

The rising costs of cocoa and dairy are at the heart of the chocolate price increase that Hershey announced July 15. The 120-year-old maker of Hershey Kisses and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups will pay particular attention to any decrease in sales caused by the price hike.

This is a critical moment for candy makers, because even some of the world’s best chocolate brands are fighting for U.S. consumers in a shrinking market.

Nestle candy bars will also cost more.

One of Hershey’s biggest competitors Mars Chocolate North America said on Wednesday it was raising prices 7 percent. Just three months ago, The world’s biggest confectioner, Swiss-based Nestle SA, warned of price changes only three months ago.

The Washington Post reports cocoa prices are just one of several factors that dictate the price chocolate lovers pay to satisfy a craving—sugar, milk, packaging, processing, and shipping costs all contribute, too. Chocolate makers reasonably expect these commodities and factors to fluctuate, because they tend to be fairly volatile. Everything from poor weather to pests, and even political turmoil in major cocoa producing countries, can affect its price.

As for Hershey Co., the price increase goes into effect immediately.

Africanized bees are also known as killer bees and can chase up to a mile.

Talk about a buzz kill. A Texas street department worker in Wichita Falls was stung 1,000 times by killer bees Thursday. Two of his coworkers were also attacked while trying to help him.

The worker was mowing a lawn when the bees stung him. Wichita Falls city officials say the bees were Africanized honey bees, that are also known as killer bees. All three men were taken to a local hospital and are expected to recover.

Africanized honey bees attack in large numbers and can chase their target up to a quarter of a mile, according to the Smithsonian Institution.

USA Today reports the average adult can tolerate about 10 stings per pound of body weight. Broken down into layman’s terms, that means an adult can withstand more than 1,100 stings, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

If you find yourself in the midst of an attack, run away, or get indoors as fast as possible, and don’t swat, because that will make the killer bees angrier, according to an article on the killer bees published for the University of Georgia. The article also warns not jump into a pool or body of water, because the bees will be waiting for you when you come out.

If you see a swarm of bees, call a professional bee removal service, the fire department, or even your county extension agent for help. You definitely don’t want to rumble with a bee, and we’re not talking about Lil’ Kim.

University of Iowa researchers have discovered that background TV is not only bad for children, but when you do allow them to watch the box, the programming should always stimulate their interest in learning.

Background TV, defined as a television playing when a child is not watching, can easily divert a kid’s attention from learning and other activities, such as playing.  The study also found that non-educational programs can negatively affect children’s cognitive development. The results stemmed from a national survey of more than 1,150 families with children between ages two and eight years old.

“Kids are going to learn from whatever you put in front of them,” says Deborah Linebarger, UI associate professor in education. “So what kinds of messages, what kinds of things do you want them to learn? That would be the kinds of media you’d purposefully expose them to.”

Linebarger and her research team found a relationship between the type of content children are exposed to and their executive function. This was found to be especially true amongst children in families identified as “high risk”; families living in poverty or families whose parents have little to no formal education.

Her advice to combat background TV and its potential effects? “Sit down to watch a particular show and when it’s done, turn it off,” Linebarger says.
