Amtrak Is Offering Writers’ Residencies

Amtrak

No more trying to find a coffee shop with reliable WiFi and clean bathrooms. No more praying your roommate can refrain from talking for half a day while you peck away on the keyboard. It’s still in the “test-run” phase, but it’s OK to get your hopes up because Amtrak has confirmed that it will be implementing a writing residency program. It’s just what it sounds like: writers will be able to take long (hopefully free), roundtrip train rides with the sole purpose of writing. It’s genius because between the people watching, the change of scenery and the quiet, it’s hard to come up with excuses not to be productive (a writers’ favorite game). If you don’t suffer from motion sickness, it’s essentially the perfect environment to write your essay, novel or screenplay.

It all started with Alexander Chee’s interview in PEN Ten America where he said, “I still like a train best for [writing]. I wish Amtrak had residencies for writers.” Other writers voiced similar sentiments on Twitter and with some attention from Amtrak, and a few emails, Jessica Gross took the first, totally free test-run from NYC to Chicago and back, sharing the details of her journey in The Paris Review.

LeBron James Denies ‘Space Jam 2′ Rumors: ‘It’s News To Me’

LeBron JamesThe Space Jam sequel starring LeBron James may never get cleared for liftoff.

Last week, Deadline reported the NBA champ had signed on for a second installment of the animated sports flick that originally starred Michael Jordan. The 1996 movie grossed more than $230 million worldwide.

Despite Warner Bros. reported confirmation, James seems to have no idea about the upcoming project. In an interview with The Palm Beach Post, he stated:

“It’s news to me. I haven’t heard anything about it. Like I said, I’ve always loved Space Jam 1. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. If I have the opportunity, it’d be great. But that’s news to me. Obviously I don’t want to be on there with this thing on my nose [note: a reference to his currently bandaged, broken nose]. We’ll see what happens. [...] I haven’t heard about it. Maybe they’ve got it in my office. I haven’t been to my office in a while.”
There you have it, folks. What is certain is that James will go forward with his Starz sitcom Survivor’s Remorse later this year.

Robin Thicke, Paula PattonAnother one bites the dust: Robin Thicke and Paula Patton are calling it quits.

In a statement released Monday (Feb. 24), the couple confirmed they are going their separate ways after nearly nine years of marriage.

“We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” they said in a joint statement. The pair were last seen together at the Grammy Awards in late January.

In 1991, a then-14-year-old Thicke met Patton and the pair quickly became high school sweethearts.

Thicke and Patton married in June 2005 and share one son, three-year-old Julian Fuego.

Sparkle

Name: Sparkle Joy Williams Capps

Occupation: Product Operations at Facebook HQ

Current City: Mountain View, CA

Hometown: Woodstock, MD

Age: 29

NMAAHC Ambassadors Program: What inspired her to join the Ambassadors Program: Growing up, I went to museum’s in DC all the time. While I enjoyed them, I never really appreciated them until I got older. Now that I live on the West Coast, I’ve really come to value the history I grew up witnessing in a way I was unable to appreciate before. Especially as we continue to diversify as a nation, it’s important to remember our history and I want to be a part of making that happen, both within my own family and the nation as a whole. *What she most looks forward to when the Museum opens: I’m excited to bring my kids and take a little walking tour of history! *Why she believes the Museum is an important project for this country: As we grow as a nation, we begin to forget so much of how we got here. Remembering where we come from helps us to appreciate what we have and keeps us from repeating past mistakes.  This museum will help us remember.

REFLECTIONS: First job:  My first job after I graduated from Stanford was with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto performing Bone Strength and Mechanics research in the Spinal Cord Injury Unit. While it doesn’t reflect the work I currently do, it was an amazing and life changing experience that I would not trade for the world. * Advice she’d have given herself 10 years ago:  Pace yourself. Don’t get discouraged when the things you try to achieve in life don’t fall in place right away. Remember that you have a lifetime to learn new skills and put them to good use! * Most valuable life lesson learned:  Take pride in the work you do. * Her mantra: No regrets. Make the best decisions you can with the information you have. Regardless of how things turn out, you can be comfortable with your present and look to the future! * Working on currently: Writing a cookbook

DIVERSIONS: Currently reading: I’m currently rereading Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card. I’m a huge Science Fiction/Fantasy fan! * Place to meet friends for drinks: I don’t really go to bars or lounges (I like food way too much!) but Scratch in Mountain View, CA is one of my favorite places to meet friends. The majority of items on their menu are either domestic (like the drinks) or made in house (like the Caramel Ice Cream!) They have a seasonal menu that does not disappoint! * Last place she dined out: Crepevine – Mountain View, CA – I indulged my sweet tooth a bit and decided on a strawberry crepe with Nutella for dinner. * Guilty pleasure: I love going to my local bookstore to purchase books by my favorite authors when they come out in print and are only available in hard cover!

Look-Alike Comedian Sues Eddie Murphy For $50 Million

uptown_eddiemurphybrandomurphyBrando Murphy argues that Shrek star Eddie Murphy is hell-bent on destroying his budding comedy career and is suing for a whopping $50 million.

Brando claims Eddie publicized how the amateur comedian acts and looks like him on stage. However, Eddie’s camp has threatened to sue Brando for insinuating a kinship to the Nutty Professor actor by performing alongside Richard Pryor‘s son, Mason, in the “Sons Of Comedy” tour and changing his last name to Murphy. “The name Murphy is of Irish decent … and not exclusive to Eddie Murphy, a ‘Black Man’ of African ancestry and a purported African American,” reads Brando’s lawsuit against Eddie.

Brando claims he’s never presented himself as Eddie’s son, calling the reports “vile, base, contemptible, miserable, wretched, and loathsome.”

Eddie’s lawyer, Marty Singer, told TMZ, “This is an absolutely ridiculous lawsuit, and  we are confident it will be immediately dismissed by the court.”

In the Facebook video, Morrison revealed physical and emotional abuse, including rape, feeling unloved by her family, and loneliness. She spoke of her failed relationship and low self-esteem as a result of being dark-skinned. Morrison posted a Facebook video of her digesting pills from six of her father’s bottles. White Ole Miss Students Hang Noose On Civil Rights Statue

uptown-olemissstatue
Three 19-year-old white college students have been expelled from Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the fraternity’s chapter has been suspended from campus, after they reportedly hung a noose and a Confederate-like flag over the University of Mississippi’s statue of James Meredith.

National organization Sigma Phi Epsilon expelled the three freshman from the organization before suspending the university’s Alpha Chapter. They later turned the identities of the three men over to the University Police Department (UPD).

A school contractor overhead two young men screaming racial slurs before discovering that a noose and the former Georgia state flag displaying a small Confederate flag adorned the statue. Civil rights icon Meredith entered the all-white male school in 1962 amid resistance from Mississippi’s governor to graduate with a degree in political science.

Meredith, who still lives in Mississippi, has responded to the incident. The 80 year old told the Los Angeles Times, “That just clearly shows that we’re not training our children like the Bible says. They don’t know right and wrong, good and bad and how to apply it to life.”

uptown-olemissprotestAll three men have sought legal counsel and are suspended from campus. The students initially agreed to cooperate, but their attorneys informed the school they would only release statements if criminal charges are filed. The university’s chief of police Calvin Sellers said the three students’ names were prominent in their investigation, which also involves the FBI. The school says other than the three students, no suspects have been identified. A camera that monitors the statue has not been working since 2008. A $25,000 reward offered by the school’s alumni association has lead to an influx of tips.

Ole Miss has fended off rumors of racial activity in recent years. A student protest against the re-election of President Barack Obama turned disorderly when students chanted racial slurs. There were two arrests. However, this past week, students on the campus protested around the statue to show their disapproval of the students’ actions. Their signs read: “This is Our university! It’s our time for action!” It was meant to remind the country and university that there’s still work to do since segregation was banned.

“You have systemic racism in our country. We have it in this state, and we have it in this university—much less so than in years past, but there’s systemic racism everywhere in the world. I wish that it weren’t so,” said University of Mississippi Chancellor Daniel Jones to CNN.

Jermaine Dupri Sued For $1 Million For Unpaid Royalties

uptown_jermainedupriAtlanta producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri is being sued by his former Dieniahmar Music LLC partner for $1 million for unpaid royalties.

Eddie Weathers and Dupri, whose real name is Jermaine Mauldin, launched the So So Def record label in 2005, and Weathers claim to have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars since the label began. According to the lawsuit, the two partners agreed to split all earnings in half. Dupri partnered with EMI in a co-publishing deal, but allegedly didn’t give Weathers his share of royalties from the collaboration between 2006 and 2013. The court documents claim all EMI payments were paid directly to Dupri and his business manager. Dupri argues that “he was the sole owner in Dieniahmar when in fact he was not.”

Dupri ended up selling Dieniahmar in 2013. And while Edwards was meant to earn $238,000 from the purchase, he only received $10,000. Weathers is suing for his share of the company, totaling exactly $1 million.

Dupri is currently managing longtime friend Mariah Carey.

Motion to Dismiss Drake Knockoff Case Denied

Drake Sued for Copyright Infringement
It’s not a good two weeks for Young Money/Cash Money superstars. Last week, Nicki Minaj‘s former wig designer filed a lawsuit against her for $30 million. Now, Drake‘s motion to dismiss a copyright infringement lawsuit for reproducing knockoffs of a jeweler’s almost $50,000 diamond-studded platinum chain has been denied.

The suit filed last fall by Baden Baden Inc. alleges that Drake knocked off Baden Baden CEO and jeweler Michael Raphael’s owl pendant chain design for Drake’s October’s Very Own (OVO) Merchandising. After photos of Drake’s friends Big Sean and Justin Bieber donning the chain started appearing on his Instagram feed, Raphael accused the singer/rapper of copyright infringement. Baden Baden Inc. presented screenshots of Drake’s Instagram account along with court documents.

Drake’s legal team asked the judge to dismiss the case this month because the symbol is not an original design, but in fact dates back to Egypt over 5,000 years ago. According to court documents, Drake argues that the owl figure is the Egyptian hieroglyph for the letter M and is not an original to be copyrighted. In fact, the symbol has been appeared on other items for sale by OVO Merchandising and low quality knockoffs can be found on eBay. However, the suit is specifically against the reproduction of the chains and not the symbol itself.

Last week, the judge heard oral arguments from both sides and denied a motion to throw out the case. Baden Baden can continue to pursue legal action. Raphael, who also served as the Drake’s fashion stylist, also filed a suit claiming he is owed $76,490 for unpaid expenses and for breach of contract. That suit is still outstanding.

President Obama Announces Detroit Manufacturing Institute, Plans for More

uptown-obama

President Obama unveiled a pair of new “manufacturing innovation institutes” yesterday, adding a bit of humor while announcing a new public-private partnership near Detroit devoted to developing light weight metals. “Basically, I’m here to announce that we’re building Iron Man — I’m going to blast off in a second,” joked the president. According to USA Today, a second “innovation hub” will be located in Obama’s hometown of Chicago.

This second hub will focus on digital manufacturing and design. During a White House ceremony, Obama said that he wants America to be on the cutting edge in order to “attract more good manufacturing jobs.” Plans for four innovation hubs this year are under way, given the ability to fund the projects.  A previous manufacturing hub has already been established in Youngstown, Ohio, as well as an Energy Department-led hub in Raleigh, N.C.  Some of the items, Obama said, that could be made by these kinds of manufacturing hubs include the support frame of a joint strike fighter, the engine for a helicopter, a robotic arm used in underwater explosive removal, and a 3-D printer.

Pittsburgh’s August Wilson Center Facing Closure

Pittsburgh August Wilson Center

After five short years of being open, Pittsburgh’s August Wilson Center for African American Culture is up for sale, unable to pay its bills and in the red by $10 million.

The polished four-story facility occupies a full block in downtown Pittsburgh. It has been closed and its stages vacant while organizers scramble for a viable option to emerge from debt. The $42 million-dollar center born out of the idea of providing a cultural hub for African-American theater, art and education, is named after hometown two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson.

Wilson grew up in a predominately black neighborhood in Pittsburgh in the 1940s and 1950s. The city served as a backdrop for his cycle of 10 plays, which documented the black experience over 10 decades. He died in 2005 and the building was later completed in 2009.

The next two years the center would become crippled by debt, unable to pay employees and vendors, and the reigns handed over to retired bankruptcy judge Judith Fitzgerald. Court-appointed representatives for the center muddled through missing financial records to find out when the center opened its doors, millions in debt stemming from exceeding projected construction costs already loomed over the facility.

Fitzgerald said “essentially every door that we tried to open was not available to us” and that the situation was dire. Out of options, she recommended liquidation.

Last month, a judge stated there was “no other reasonable or cognizable option” but to allow the building to be sold to resolve over $7 million mortgage and other debt.  Interest from the Pittsburgh public school disctrict to buy the center has fizzled. Responses for donations have gone unanswered, leaving many wondering why other cultural organizations have received support from the community. Some think it may be due to the center’s business plans which over estimated revenues resulting in negative cash flow based on actual revenue and costs.

At this time, no buyers have stepped forward to assist in keeping the doors open. Fitzgerald remains hopeful that a buyer will come forward. She is accepting proposals until March 31 to have a new owner selected by June 30.

Abandoned Baby Boy Found Alive In Trash Can

uptown-baby

A maintenance worker found a newborn baby alive in a Texas dumpster. After hearing cat mewing sounds coming from the dumpster, the worker approached and found the baby boy, then purple and struggling for air, in a white trash bag, along with containers of food, scraps and school work.  The maintenance worker took the baby to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.  Police have since identified the mother as a 16-year-old who attends South Houston High School.  The teen is now under examination at the same hospital where her baby is being cared for.  Once released, she will be questioned by police, who will then decide whether to bring up charges.  This case of child abandonment is particularly odd because Texas has a special law to help new mothers who can’t take care of their children.  The law states that babies up to 60-days-old can be dropped off without fear of prosecution at any hospital, fire station or ambulance station, as long as the baby is handed off to a person.

Guadeloupe: Life’s A Beach

“Karukera,” the name its original inhabitants used, means “island of beautiful waters” by most accounts. However, its modern handle “Guadeloupe” is the result of a 1493 visit from Christopher Columbus. France, which later imported African slaves to cultivate tobacco and sugar, laid an early claim in the 1600s, but played tug-of-war with England for years. Today, Guadeloupe Islands is a French overseas department, with parliamentary representation. The face of its U.S. campaign, French-born model Willy Monfret, known for his work with Ralph Lauren and Sean John, has deep roots in the region on his dad’s side. “Let Me Show You My Islands” is his tagline; and, boy, is there ever a lot to see.

ROUGHING IT

Nature lovers flock to La Soufrière, a rugged national park accessible through the village of Saint-Claude near Basse-Terre. Hiking the volcano or leisurely exploring the many trails is often capped by relaxing in the hot springs of Bains Jaunes or Yellow Baths (many swear it possesses healing powers). For a slightly dialed-down eco- experience, the family friendly Mangofil, with its memorable zip-lining experience and kidapproved ropes course, scores big. An added bonus is the quaint on-site restaurant anchored in an old French country stone house with a wooden water wheel nearby. Not only is the appropriately allnatural menu delish, but the tree canopy table, with a netted walkway, is quite couplicious. Tip: Find cozy accommodations right in Saint-Claude at the eco-lodges of Vert Intense.

UNWIND

Completely unplugging is easy at Tendacayou , the eco-lodge boutique hotel and spa tucked away in Morne-Bois d’Inde in the splendidly unspoiled Basse- Terre wilderness of lovely Deshaies. Colorful and eclectic, housing options range from bungalows made for five guests to treetop lodges tailor-made for two. Red Fish, the onsite resto named for the popular catch, has a funky decor mixing naturally finished and brightly colored wood, and the views are “pinch-yourself” unreal. Bringing the best of the outdoors in makes the spa especially noteworthy. Along with wraps using seasonal fruit and honey and sugar exfoliation body treatments, it even has its own mini-waterfall. The town, where the BBC crime dramedy Death in Paradise is filmed, might be a tad more populated, but the overall breezy vibe still prevails.

uptown guadeloupe playa de caravelle

BEACH PERFECT

Sandy relaxation is extremely diverse in Guadeloupe. Stay at Auberge de la Vieille Tour in the heart of Gosier, Guadeloupe’s largest seaside resort city, and stroll to authentic eateries and one-of-a-kind shops, as well as the beach, Plage de Gosier—a local hang for the younger set. A short taxi away is Sainte-Anne, a sort of Coney Island or Venice Beach, where, in addition to plush sand and cool people watching, visitors can purchase any infused rum imaginable (along with fresh sugarcane juice and arts and crafts). Les Saintes, which requires a ferry ride, is a sophisticated outing where history, casual gourmet fare (like that at Ti Kaz’ la, which literally sits on the water) and sailing in Les Saintes Bay (some of the best in the world) easily mesh. Tip: For a longer trip, the stylish Les Petits Saints Hotel is close to the action, while Le Jardin Malanga, surrounded by fruit trees and lush vegetation, is more hushed. Want a more rural or reclusive experience? Ferry over to either Marie-Galante or La Désirade.

THE SUITE LIFE

Not far from Sainte-Anne on Grande-Terre, La Toubana Hotel & Spa is its own slice of paradise. Hole up in one of the 32 bungalows, which come with private terraces; chill on the private beach; or lounge at the infinity pool, where part of Le Bar de la Mer literally perches over a cliff—so be especially careful with the island fave, Ti’Punch, made with strong rum and little else.

DO KNOW

French is the main language, so brush up with Rosetta Stone. December to May is the dry season. Be prepared to spend lots of euros, and factor in hired transportation when planning. And, for the best visit, seek guidance from the Guadeloupe Islands Tourist Board.

Real Weddings: Picture Perfect – Eliza & Don

uptown real weddings eliza don 3By Jason Alexander

After a chance meeting at a mutual friend’s event, and a proposal on a private beach in the Virgin Islands, theirs was a classic romance that seemed scripted for the big screen. But, less than one week before Eliza and Don’s nuptials, D.C. was hit by an intense storm that caused significant damage to their wedding venue. Eliza, an archivist, had envisioned an outdoor garden ceremony at the Meridian House.

However, when she and then-fiancé Don, a federal contractor, went to look at the site, the land was strewn with fractured branches, broken trees and other storm debris. Being told they would likely have to hold the ceremony indoors only added to the couple’s stress level.

That’s when the hardworking team at Meridian House went into action, working relentlessly to make sure this love story had a happy ending. By the day before the wedding, you couldn’t tell that anything had ever happened. “We were able to have the ceremony outside, as we had hoped, and everything turned out beautifully,” Eliza says.

Man Thought He Wouldn’t Get Caught For Abusing His Stepsister

0

UPTOWN_abused_womanA 20-year-old Wisconsin man thought he wouldn’t get caught for abusing his stepsister, so he continued the abuse for six years.

According to prosecutors, the unidentified man, who began abusing his stepsister when she was 9 and he was 13, abused her because he didn’t think anyone would find out. The inconsistencies in her story and the lack of physical evidence caused jurors to be skeptical of her accusations.

When the teenage girl initially reached out for help and social workers became involved, according to the Huffington Post, she was sent to live with her grandfather in Minnesota. Upon returning to Wisconsin, she was home-schooled, starved, and suffered from continued abuse while living in an unfinished basement with boarded up windows at the behest of her father and stepmother. In early 2012, she ran away from home and was treated at a hospital, where she informed authorities of her living conditions. She was barefoot, severely malnourished, and weighed 68 pounds. Both guardians were convicted of child abuse.

Jurors convicted the stepbrother of first-degree sexual assault of a child, second-degree sexual assault of a child, and child abuse. He pleaded no contest to sexual assault in a separate 2011 case. And is facing sexual assault charges in another case involving a third girl.

Mathew Knowles Unable to Pay Child Support for 4 Year Old

 Mathew Knowles

The mother of Mathew Knowles‘ 4-year-old son he fathered while married to Tina Knowles says Knowles is $32,000 behind in court-ordered child support and hasn’t taken care of his responsibilities.

Alexsandra Wright, a 40-year-old former actress, is speaking out to Inside Edition saying she will be forced to file for public assistance if Mathew Knowles doesn’t help with their son Nixon Alexander Knowles. In December 2013, a judge ordered Knowles’ to pay $24,000 in back child support payments. He was ordered to continue making payments of $12,000 a month. Yet, Wright claims that Knowles has again fallen behind on payments.

Besides not assisting with childcare, Knowles also rarely visits his son. To add insult to injury, Wright confirmed that Mathew suggested Beyoncé and JAY Z to take care of the child before the birth of their first child Blue Ivy Carter.

Wright said her affair with Mathew lasted 18 months and ended after the news of the affair went public. He initially denied the child was his and ordered a paternity test which revealed that he fathered the child. The revelation rocked the Knowles clan and shortly spiraled into a downfall of misfortune for Mathew. He and Beyoncé’s mother Tina separated after 31 years of marriage. Beyoncé then relieved him as her manager to manage herself through Parkwood Entertainment. His other daughter Solange Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, the other members of Destiny’s Child, all severed their management relationship with his Music World entertainment. Music World was sued by an accounting firm in January 2014 for $64,587.14 in unpaid debt.

Mathew remarried  in June 2013 to former model Gena Charmaine Avery but none of his daughters attended the wedding, citing previous engagements. Tina is now dating Richard Lawson. The two were seen at her New Orleans’ masquerade party.

Family Is Moving To Allow Infant Son To Get Medical Marijuana

UPTOWN_medical_marijuanaA New York family is moving to allow minor son to get medical marijuana.

“I don’t know what someone’s objection would be, looking at my son have a seizure and say I don’t want to give him medicine to help him,” Joe Wertman told WKBW-TV.

The Wertman family is planning to move to Arizona next month as a last resort to treat their 9-month-old son, Joey, who suffers from severe seizures. Medical marijuana is illegal in New York. In order to relieve their son of the suffering, the Wertmans are preparing to move to Arizona, where the law is different.

Last year, a 5-year-old child, who suffered weekly seizures, made headlines when his parents revealed they were preparing to treat him with medicinal marijuana. Dr. Steven Wolf, director of Pediatric Epilepsy at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, says that cannabidiol oil (CBD), a chemical found in marijuana, as a treatment for ailments needs investigation and that parents should be cautious of treating their children until further results are clear.

Although the therapeutic herb is illegal in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced an initiative to allow a limited number of hospitals to dispense marijuana for certain ailments, ABC reports.

 arizona sb 1062 vetoed

By Colby Carrington

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer announced Wednesday night the veto of SB 1062, the religious freedom bill approved last week by state Republicans.

The bill – which passed the state’s House and Senate – would have given Arizona businesses to deny service to gay and lesbian customers based on religious beliefs.

There was tremendous pressure from major corporations to not pass the bill. The NFL threatened to pull the 2015 Superbowl from Scottsdale, and companies including Delta Air Lines, Yelp, PetSmart released statements encouraging the governor to veto the bill.

During a press conference, Brewer focused on the business impact of such a bill on the state economy.”I made my priorities for this session abundantly clear… among them are passing a responsible budget that continues Arizona’s economic comeback, ” she stated.

Full transcript of her comments below:
SB 1062 – Press Conference Remarks by Gov. Jan Brewer

Good evening, and thank you for joining me here today.

I am here to announce my decision on Senate Bill 1062.

As with every proposal that reaches my desk, I gave Senate Bill 1062 careful evaluation and
deliberate consideration. I call them like I see them, despite the cheers or boos from the crowd.

I took the time necessary to make the RIGHT decision. I met or spoke with my attorneys,
lawmakers and citizens supporting and opposing this legislation.

I listened . . . and asked questions.

As Governor, I have protected religious freedoms when there is a specific and present concern
that exists in OUR state.

And I have the record to prove it.

My agenda is to sign into law legislation that advances Arizona.

When I addressed the Legislature earlier this year, I made my priorities for this session
abundantly clear…

Among them are passing a responsible budget that continues Arizona’s economic Comeback.
From CEOs — to entrepreneurs — to business surveys — Arizona ranks as one the best states
to grow or start a business.

Additionally, our IMMEDIATE challenge is fixing a broken Child Protection system.

Instead, this is the first policy bill to cross my desk.

Senate Bill 1062 does not address a specific and present concern related to religious liberty in
Arizona. I have not heard of one example in Arizona where a business owner’s religious liberty
has been violated.

The bill is broadly worded and could result in unintended and negative consequences.

After weighing all of the arguments, I vetoed Senate Bill 1062 moments ago.

To the supporters of the legislation, I want you to know that I understand that long-held norms
about marriage and family are being challenged as never before.

Our society is undergoing many dramatic changes. However, I sincerely believe that Senate
Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve.

It could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and no one would ever want.

Religious liberty is a core American and Arizona value, so is non-discrimination.

Going forward, let’s turn the ugliness of the debate over Senate Bill 1062 into a renewed
search for greater respect and understanding among ALL Arizonans and Americans.

Thank you.
