The WORST Part About Cheating (And It’s NOT The Sex)

$
0
0

UPTOWN_man_holding_broken_heart2It really feels like I’m always the last to hear about traumatic occurrences in celebrities’ love lives. And since I like to write about sex and relationships, my friends and followers are always keeping me apprised of what’s going on just to hear my opinion on certain issues. That same scenario played itself out earlier this week when I woke up to a gang of emails and texts from people asking me my opinion on Dwyane Wade‘s new baby.

My first reaction was: “Gabrielle Union’s pregnant? Wow, I’m really not up on this celebrity drama at all.” But then I was quickly corrected and told that the breaking news is that D. Wade just had a son with some jump-off he got pregnant, while on “a break” from his now-fiancee Gabrielle Union. (BTW, I’m not buying the “on a break” bullshit because that’s just cleverly worded PR stuff). The timing couldn’t have been worse, seeing as they just flooded social media with their engagement announcement. And the timing is so interesting, because, as I mentioned on my podcast Sunday, I planned to write an article discussing the worst part about cheating, and now there’s a situation that proves my point to a tee.

The worst part about cheating, even worse than the sex or broken bond (if you believe in emotional cheating) is the public embarrassment that the cheater puts their significant other through. While the pain of having a partner step out stings like hell, it pales in comparison to the pain caused by being made a fool for everyone to see.

UPTOWN_woman_cell_phoneI’ve made some bad choices in my life and I’ve cheated before. It’s something I completely regret and will make sure to never do again. What made me ill about the cheating was a weird conversation I had with the chick I cheated with. She called me one night after we smashed, and she asked me what I was doing. When I responded that I was spending the night with my girl, she said, “Leave that stupid bitch and come hang out with me.”

I instantly got heated, and I slowly picked myself up off the couch and walked to the other room. Through gritted teeth I said, “Who the fuck do you think you’re talking about like that?” And she said two sentences that stuck with me through the entirety of my relationship, and have stayed seared into my mind to this very day:

“I bet your dumb ass girl doesn’t even know that you were inside me last week. If you loved her so much, you wouldn’t need to betray her to get some.”

The fact that I heard one of her girlfriends laughing in the background compounded my rage, and after cussing her out, I realized that my anger wasn’t for her – it was for myself.

That girl and her friend weren’t laughing at me, as much as they were laughing at my woman. They were clowning her for caring about me, even though I didn’t deserve it. They made her into a punchline and I gave them all the ammo they needed to do it.

UPTOWN_couple_arguingSee, when I’m in a relationship I love to look at it as “us against the world.” We have each other’s back when no one else does, and we love each other no matter what we’re going through. But that context is completely wiped out when one person cheats on the other, because now there’s a massive secret going around that everyone knows except the person that’s suppose to care for you more than anyone else. When you’re out, they are the happily ignorant fool who beams with pride while hugging a traitor. When you’re alone, they are giving you every ounce of the love they believe you deserve, but you really don’t. They become your fool and everyone else’s too.

That’s why I personally find it difficult to stomach cheating on a woman at this stage in my life, because I’m not trying to find a girlfriend – I’m trying to find a wife. And it would consume every ounce of me to know that there’s some other unworthy chick who could walk around degrading my woman’s name because of my selfish actions.

In terms of D. Wade’s situation, I personally think people are foolish as hell to be all up in arms over something that his soon-to-be-wife has accepted. People are going on long-ass Twitter rants and getting all overemotional over a situation that doesn’t even involve them. But I think that cheating is so prevalent in many relationships that many of us aren’t even truly arguing about them – it’s more or less about us and our feelings about infidelity, which too many of us are familiar with. While it’s one thing to break your lover’s heart, it’s a  whole other thing to publicly drag it through the mud for everyone to see, while it still beats strong for only you. That’s the worst kind of deceit.

uptown-eddie-robert-islandPolice say a Louisiana teen killed his mother Tamila Wooley and told his siblings she was sick, WAFB reports.

Thirty-four-year-old Wooley’s body was discovered by a family friend in her bedroom on New Year’s Day said Walker, LA Police Capt. John Sharp. When police arrived on the scene, they discovered she suffered multiple gunshot wounds and had been dead for two or more days. They noticed that her black Lexus Sedan was missing, as was her 17-year-old son, Eddie Robert Island.

Witnesses say they saw Island driving the Lexus. Law enforcement noted that the teen was not licensed or authorized to use the vehicle.

Around 2 a.m. Thursday morning, police performed a traffic stop on the Lexus and identified the teen as the sole driver of the vehicle. He was then detained for questioning.

“During questioning, Mr. Island confessed to shooting his mother late the night of Sunday, December 29th, or early in the morning Monday, December 30th,” said police. “After obtaining a confession from Mr. Island, he was transported to the Livingston Parish Detention Center and charged with second degree murder.”

In his confession, he explained he returned home for several days to attend to the children’s needs. He told his younger half-brother and half-sister that their mother was sick and not to disturb her. The two younger siblings, ages 2 and 11, were found unharmed. They are now placed in the custody of the state, until relatives arrive, said Capt. Sharp.

The teen was then booked and charged with second-degree murder.

The Associated Press noted they do not generally name juveniles who are accused of crimes.

Seattle Woman Eats At Starbucks For One Whole Year

Starbucks Only For One Year

For most of us, a meal at Starbucks is the occasional treat but Seattle blogger Beautiful Existence decided for 2013 she would challenge herself to eat only Starbucks for one year.

Existence, 40, wanted to discover “how a company can exist in the world and create kind of a message and image.” Her background in marketing and social media made her curious to learn about the culture of local companies. It didn’t hurt that her sister has worked at Starbucks for years.

But taking on the challenge did have its disadvantages. Over the course of each month Existence spent between $500 and $600 at Starbucks -a total of more than $7,000 last year. The company did not give her any discounts or special consideration for choosing them. They did stay in contact with her about new items throughout the year said Linda Mills, a spokeswoman at Starbucks.

In addition to the new items, she blogged about her experience to stay motivated. She and her fiance exchanged love notes on Starbucks cups. (Talk about keeping the romance extra hot.)

Existence, who previously shopped for everything at Goodwill except groceries in 2011, was won over by Starbucks.

“…It is really the community within that brand that makes everything,” she said. “I learned so much this year it’s unbelievable and it’s so hard to put down in a blog. I mean, you really almost have to write a book.”

However she says she doesn’t know when she’ll be going back to the chain.

Up next for Existence will be learning 80 sports, including ice climbing and skiing through sporting retailer REI.

“I’m going to be very fit by the end of this year,” she said.

Thief Returns Stolen Cell Because It Was A Flip Phone

UPTOWN_no_flip_phoneIt seems as if not having the latest Apple iPhone or Android mobile can be a positive thing — at least when it comes to cell phone muggings.

Last Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, New York resident Kevin Cook and a friend were mugged at gun point in Central Park for their cell phones and other items. After Cook obeyed the robber and surrendered his third-generation Windows phone, the robber quickly returned the cell because it was a flip phone.

“Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, ‘What the f–k is this?’ and gave it back to me,” Cook reported to the New York Post.

About 40 percent of robberies in major American cities involve cell phones, the Federal Communications Commission reports. Stolen phones are then resold in the $30 billion dollar underground business. Apple products are the most sought after.

Cook’s incident isn’t too uncommon. Last year, two Columbia University students were robbed for their cell phones. The assailant quickly returned their phones because they were Blackberrys.

Rick Ross Sues LMFAO Over Line In Smash Hit ‘Party Rock Anthem’

UPTOWN_rick_rossMiami rapper Rick Ross won’t be party rockin’ anytime soon. The “Devil Is A Lie” rapper and production team The Runners are suing pop duo LMFAO for copyright infringement for their 2010 smash hit, “Party Rock Anthem,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The song repeatedly uses the line, “Everyday I’m shufflin’,” in the same manner Ross raps, “Everyday I’m hustlin’” in his 2006 breakout track “Hustlin’.” The lawsuit alleges the line is a part of the prominent, super catchy hook as an obvious attempt to capitalize off Ross’ song. The “Party Rock Anthem” has sold over 7.5 million copies and has been used in numerous advertisements and commercials. Ross’ camp is seeking maximum statutory damages.

Ross recently celebrated a legal victory against former drug kingpin Freeway Ricky Ross, after Freeway sued him for adopting his name and likeness. The case, after an appeal, was dismissed, citing the First Amendment.

The Impossible Task Of Deleting Facebook Posts

$

UPTOWN_man_frustratedFacebook isn’t as innocuous as it was when it first started. Now, potential employers are known to check on job applicants’ profiles before make hiring decisions. Needless to say, most people have a few pictures they’d rather their boss not see. (Remember that spring break in Miami?) However, it’s not as easy as it should be to delete your content.

Jennifer Golbeck of Slate tried to do just that. She set out to delete everything on her Facebook profile that was over a month old. Having joined Facebook back in 2005, that is a lot of content. Of course you can deactivate your profile, but that still doesn’t really get rid of your content because it’s still floating around in the gray spaces of Facebook. The only way to truly get rid of your content via Facebook, Golbeck discovered, is to delete each item from your activity log one by one. Every. Single. Item.

Even then, there are some things that will remain. Anything you ever “liked” has to be unliked in order to be removed. You cannot delete the notification of you becoming friends with someone else, but you can hide it from your activity log.

However, there are two applications on the market that can automate the process: Absterge and Facebook Timeline Cleaner. The only problem with those is, you don’t have much selection over what gets deleted. You can select the type of posts you want to delete or the time frame. Still, Goldbeck noted that certain items she deleted would come up again, leaving one to wonder if posts on Facebook ever truly die.

So be careful with what you share on Facebook. As online personas spill over into different facets of our lives, it will become increasingly important to tailor our various social networking profiles. And in the case of Facebook, it seems you can’t make any mistakes because they may haunt you forever.

Wedding Blues: How Our Dreams Can Get In The Way

$

0

WeddingBluesOne of my best friends is getting married. We, The Fabulous Five as we like to call ourselves, are all extremely excited because she’s the first among us to get engaged, so it’s a huge deal. We’ve all been friends since high school, and we’ve been waiting for this moment. However, when we all got together for dinner this past weekend, she’s not excited at all because everything is not going to be the way she’d always dreamed of it being. In fact, she was downright surly.

Let’s give some background here. This girl has been wedding obsessed the whole time I’ve known her. I’m pretty sure she was the only 14 year old ever who bought bridal magazines on a regular basis. However, we all did it as giggling teenagers — spent hours on the phone talking about what our weddings would be like whilst not even having the prospect of a boyfriend. It’s ingrained in us as little girls that the most special day of our lives will be the day we get married. It’s, therefore, natural for us to fantasize and plan for that magical day. So to hear that my newly-engaged friend was upset about her impending day was especially disheartening for me.

Marriage has become about the wedding. What’s going to happen within the marriage itself is an afterthought. The first thing people think of when they become engaged is planning the wedding. And nowadays, if your wedding isn’t an extravagant affair, it seems that it’s not worthwhile at all. Between WE tv and TLC, there are enough wedding shows to last a few years, and they typically feature these huge extravaganzas that no one without a six-figure salary can even dream of replicating.

I want the world for my friend, but the reality is that the images we see in movies and on TV shows and read about in story books are not easy to come by. So when it comes time to actually planning our weddings, we feel less than. Wedding days should focus on the love. You’ve found someone who you want to spend the rest of your life with. Revel in it! Rejoice!

If having the big gala is that important to you, then maybe you can delay your plans. Get married in a small ceremony with an intimate dinner afterwards and then begin to save up for a bigger wedding for one of your anniversaries. No, it’s not exactly how you’d always imagined, but you’re still getting what you wanted in the long run. We have to allow our dreams to be malleable. Don’t despair when things aren’t perfect, because the perfect wedding truly doesn’t exist, no matter how many times David Tutera may try to convince you that it does. Focus on the more important fact that you’ve found a life partner and things will probably seem a whole lot brighter. I’m hoping my friend embraces this idea, because the most important thing is her relationship with her fiancé, and no wedding should get in the way of that.

Miley Cyrus Denies Dissing Beyonce, Love Magazine Admits Comments Were Made Up

Miley Cyrus continues to dominate media headlines in 2014, even though the new year rang in mere days ago.

The cause behind her latest media dominance is British pub, Love Magazine. Supposedly, a copy of her cover story was leaked and contained several derogatory comments about (gasp) Beyonce including rants about her post-Blue Ivy figure and that the Queen had lost her edge.

The fake story quickly caught steam as major outlets – including US Weekly and Daily Mail - picked it up.

Cyrus took to Twitter early Thursday afternoon, vehemently denying all comments.

A few hours later, the magazine admitted that the quotes were completely made up and that an investigation was being launched.

The interview has since been removed from the publication’s website and most articles about the false interview have been recanted.

Missing Teleka PatrickTeleka Patrick, a missing medical resident, was stalking gospel singer Marvin Sapp prior to her disappearance, according to an area news station. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based WOOD-TV reported late Thursday that Sapp filed for a personal protection order in Kent County in September. In the court filing, Sapp stated that Patrick, 30, had been referring to him as her husband and had moved from California to western Michigan to join his church, the Lighthouse Full Light Center Church in Grand Rapids.

Her family had previously stated that she decided to attend Kalamazoo’s Western Michigan University for its residential psychiatry program. Sapp said Patrick had contacted his three children and had been to his home, and that he had “over 400 page(s) of correspondence from her to which I have never responded.” He added that Patrick’s stalking had gone on for at least a year prior to her moving to Michigan.

JAY ZClap for ‘em.

Despite all the controversy surrounding JAY Z‘s decision to stick with his collaboration with Barneys New York, the 44-year-old rapper has reportedly helped collect more than $1 million for his Shawn Carter Foundation.

One hundred percent of the collection’s profits were given directly to the foundation, as well as ten percent of all of Barneys’ sales on the day of the line’s debut. The charity helps students in need pay for college.

A source close to the high-end store said figures were still be tallied on Friday (Dec. 4), the last day of sales, but profits had already broke a million.

The collection– which featured luxury items from Balenciaga, Proenza Schouler, Balmain, Lanvin and more– was released to Barneys amid reports of racial profiling against two Black customers.

If you don’t know the name Geneva S. Thomas yet, you’ll probably know it soon. The 30-year old Detroit native is the youngest cast member of Bravo’s upcoming reality show Blood, Sweat And Heels, which premiers January 5th.  The pop culture and fashion journalist has worked for the likes of Ebony, Clutch Magazine and The Tyra Show. Now, she is launching the 1530 Agency, “a digital experience for fashion and lifestyle brands who want to market to Black and Latina women.” Get to know Ms. Thomas a little better with our 10 questions.

uptown geneva thomas 3

Diana Ross is her biggest fashion influence.

“Her fashion has been fearless and broken some barriers. I do also love Kelis. A lot of people don’t think she’s popping right now, but I think she’s just that girl that has informed a lot of the pop stars that we have today.”

She’s studied in London, Paris, South Africa and Scotland.

“I studied in South Africa for a year in undergrad and that was just life changing for me. One of my mentors at the time pushed me to go and it was exciting—definitely one of the transformative experiences of my life.”

She was a part of the team that helped launch the first North American store for Top Shop.

“One of my first fashion gigs was with Top Shop on the brand team. It was really exciting because I was part of the team who helped to launch the first North American store. So that was really iconic and history-making. It was a big deal for me being the only black girl on my team and being as young as I was.”

She’s a member of the Delta Theta Sorority.

“For me it was all about legacy and sisterhood. I can’t imagine Delta not being a part of my life. It’s an incredible sisterhood and network of really successful, powerful and beautiful women and everyday I’m grateful about being a Delta. Everyday.”

Her fashion forecast for 2014 is comfort.

“I think there will be more inspiration from menswear and moving away from things being so formfitting. We want to be fierce, but we also want to be comfortable. I love a high heel—my favorite shoe happens to be Brian Atwood—but I think women will embrace flats more.”

geneva thomas

What are three words to describe your style?

“I like to call it playful, sophisticated chic. I don’t like to put myself in a box. I do have a look I generally try to go for which is very clean and sexy, but I like to sometimes surprise people.”

She’s a fan of Malcolm Gladwell.

“I’m really a digital girl so I don’t have a book on my nightstand, I have a digital reader—but I have been reading Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book [David and Goliath]. I’m a big fan of Malcolm Gladwell.”

In another life, she might have been a professor.

“[If I wasn’t a journalist] I would probably be a professor. I would probably have continued on with my PhD and would have been literally teaching in someone’s graduate classroom right now [Laughs.]”

She considers staying in New York City to be her biggest accomplishment.

New York is a beast. You can’t be a big fish in the pond here. You have to swim with the sharks. In New York, it’s easy to get down and out and to give up. I don’t have any family here or on the east coast at all. So, you know, I’ve really had to develop my own support system with my friends and my mentors.

If she could give advice to her 18-year old self, it would be to chill out.

I think that I’m a classic Leo in that I can definitely be over analytical and I can hyper plan and I expect for things to go just as I planned it and, you know, I would just tell myself that it’s all gonna come together. Don’t worry, don’t overthink anything—it’s all gonna come together.

5 Steps to Acing Your First Business Trip

bThe new year has begun and with that comes the usual business travel. When traveling on behalf of your company, it can be easy to fall into the trappings of leisure and spending on the firm’s dime, especially if you’re a young professional just starting out.

It’s always best to make the most of your trip in a way that ensures you’ll continue to be that go-to professional sent to close deals—not the one banned from using the company credit card or travelling ever again.

Brazen Careerist offers five steps to successfully completing a company business trip:

1. Use the company AmEx differently

Traveling with the company corporate card means eating three-course meals three times a day, right? Wrong. Forget that you’re “supposed to” expense as many indulgent, rich meals as you can squeeze in during your trip. Go a different route. Abuse your AmEx to buy healthy meals and snacks. To prevent overindulgence at mealtime, fill your bag each morning with healthy snacks like granola bars, trail mix and pretzels. It should be enough to hold you over until your next meal.

TRANSCENDENCE

Morgan Freeman and Johnny Depp star in the upcoming sci-fi drama Transcendence from Warner Bros. Pictures and Oscar-winning cinematographer, Wally Pfister.

The official synopsis states:

“Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.

Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.”

Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany and Cillian Murphy also star.

Transcendence opens up in theaters April 18. Check out the trailer below.

Idris ElbaOnly time will reveal if we ever see the day when Idris Elba suits up to play the legendary James Bond, but you can be 100 percent sure that if he ever warms up to the idea, he won’t be the “Black Bond.”

For years, movie buffs have been rooting for the British star to take on the iconic character as a departure from the typical White actor. Even Daniel Craig, the franchise’s current agent, has backed the notion. Yet, Elba remains resistant despite public opinion and media reports.

“It’s a rumor that’s gotten out of control, basically — but that’s all it is,” he told ITV’s Lorraine. “There’s no truth in it whatsoever.”

Elba said he’s also turned off by those throwing race into the mix.

“We don’t say ‘white Bond,’ we just say ‘Bond,’” he explained. “So it suddenly becomes a Black man and he’s a ‘Black Bond.’ So I hate that phrase.”

There you have it, folks. We can only hope for a change of heart.

Porsha Williams Explains Confusion About Underground Railroad

$

Porsha Williams (formerly known as Stewart) appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen last night and tried to explain her confusion over the Underground Railroad.

In case you missed it, when Porsha went on a trip to Savannah with the rest of the girls from Real Housewives of Atlanta, they paid a visit to a historical underground railroad site. Porsha then asked where the opening was because there had to be a space for the conductor driving the train. I don’t–I just–girl, WHAT?!  I don’t think I’ve ever been so perplexed and so sad at the same time.

In any case, she decided to clear the air last night and explain herself. She claims she had “Another ‘Porsha moment’…just a little brain lapse.” She continued, “My brain was just going so fast that it was going faster than I was speaking.” Oh, sweetie…

She added that since the show has aired, she’s done a little research and brushed up on what she already knew (insert eyebrow raise here) because she wants to represent her legacy better than she did. What legacy you might ask? Her grandfather is civil rights activist Hosea Williams, which makes this entire situation all the more pitiful.

Porsha, no amount of explaining can erase ‘Railroad Gate’. It’s clear you had not an iota of a clue about what he underground railroad was about. Maybe next time we let those words catch up to that quick brain of yours before you speak, ok? Watch the video for yourself below:

College Frat Banned For Hazing That Left Pledge With One Testicle

College Frat Banned for Hazing incident

A college frat is banned after a hazing accident that left a 19-year-old with one testicle, The Smoking Gun reports.

A judicial board at Wilmington College ruled that Gamma Phi Gamma’s “rights…are permanently extinguished and henceforth the college will no longer recognize” the fraternity.

Police are still investigating a hazing incident that affected three pledges while about 20 fraternity members watched or participated. According to police, during the hazing in the fraternity house basement known as “Gobbler House,” pledges were subjected to acts of nudity, violence and simulated sex.

In one part of the initiation, fraternity members placed blindfolds on the pledges while they had “a substance described as being like ‘Icy Hot’ applied to their nipples, back, buttocks and scrotum.”

Tyler Lawrence, was struck in the testicles with “a towel fashioned as a weapon,” according to a search warrant affidavit. Lawrence fell to the ground in pain but was forced to his feet while a vinegar-soaked banana was stuffed in his mouth. The pledges were told the items could be poop or shit. After concluding the ceremony, Lawrence received a fraternity shirt.

Lawrence complained of pain in the groin and was taken to a local hospital in which he had surgery to remove one testicle resulting from “damage caused to him when he was struck by the towel.” Doctors reported Lawrence had “large bruising and contusions upon much of his torso.”

During an October 31 search of Gobbler House, police recovered “towels with balled ends, ‘icy-hot’ liniment, and other props which may have been used” during the initiation ceremony.

The fraternity was previously suspended for hazing pending an official investigation. Student could face suspension for their involvement in the ceremony. No charges have been reported.

Quvenzhane Wallis

Quvenzhané Wallis will reportedly earn $1.5 million for her starring role in the Annie remake. The film, which will also star Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks and Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan, is set to be released later this year.

According to TMZ, Wallis is receiving $750,000 as a base salary and an additional $750,000 bonus if the film does well. On top of that, she will receive 5% of profits from the movie, 5% of profits from all merchandising and 10% from all soundtrack album royalties. Not only is the little acting phenom earning the big bucks, but it is written in her contract that her name cannot appear any lower than the second position in the title credits, meaning that either Foxx or Diaz’s name will have to move over for hers. Boss.

It has also been agreed that production will provide her with three dress options for when she’s promoting the film, keeping whichever one she chooses, but she will not be permitted to lend or sell said dress. She gets to decide which bloopers can be released. Lastly, Wallis’ image can be used to promote the film but not the sale of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, feminine hygiene products, pharmaceuticals and gambling (with the exception of Japanese arcade game Pachinko).

Her parents are playing no games with her image and I love it! If she continues down this path, people will be sure not to stumble over her name ever again.
